Just to report back, the issue has been solved.

The problem was due to an old way of enqueueing scripts and a rewritten footer.php file that wasn’t copied to the footer.php file of the child template yet.

Thank you for helping me out!

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, I’ll check if there are any php errors.

    Just a little follow-up:

I noticed there were a few more errors all related to jquery.ui / jquery.
When I had a look at the date the files were changed they were older than the day I upgraded to WordPress 3.9.
On my other site these files all had the changedate set to the date I upgraded.

This makes me think somehow the files didn’t get updated for whatever reason.

I replaced the entire jquery folder with the files from the other site and now everything is working.

So just a heads-up, there might be an issue with the update to 3.9 where sometimes files don’t get updated/replaced.

That’s what I thought, all plugins I have have been there for quite some time, the problem only started when upgrading from 3.8.x to 3.9.
None of the plugins I use are what I’d consider questionable.

Well I’ll just keep an eye out for any strange behavior, for now it appears to be fixed.

    Thanks for your help again!

Ok so I’ve tracked the issue down to /wp-includes/js/jquery/ui/jquery.ui.core.min.js.
Somehow this file was modified (extensively) by something and had an error, but I was unable to find exactly were the error was.
I went to one of my other installations of WordPress and have overwritten the file with that one (I’ve backed up the ‘wrong’ file).
It now appears to be working.

Question remains is why was the file so different and what consequences might this have.

Is it possible some plugin changed this file?

By the way, thank you for your support.

I’ve already tried disabling all plugins, the problem remained.
However having said that I also went to one of my other WordPress installs and the problem didn’t exist over there.
In the meantime I’ve tracked the problem down to WPZOOM and the Meeta template, this seems to be causing the JavaScript error.

Seeing as this has nothing to do with your plugin, you can set this topic to solved as far as I’m concerned.

Thanks for your reply and your work in both Ultimate TinyMCE and WP Edit

I have been trying to debug this problem some more and I’m thinking this is caused by a javascript error.
I’m not sure what is causing it yet, but at this point I believe another plugin might be causing it.
    I’ll keep you updated.
