Can you provide me with a dumbed down version of how to create a child theme? Do I need to go to my host gator account to do this?

I’m trying to understand how to create a child theme and need a little clarification. Do I have to log into my host gator site and do everything there, or is this something I can do from my wordpress dashboard?

I’m not HTML savy and the codex that comes up first on my search is more confusing than helpful.
