SSL and urls

At this moment I have a wildcard certificate on my maindomain. This is a subdomain network installation.
What I see now is that “Visit site” in site2.maindomain.com/wp-admin would redirect to site2.maindomain.com and then go to primarydomain.com. The same goes for primary.com and click on “Dashboard”. It will first go to https://primary.com/wp-admin and then https://site2.maindomain.com/wp-admin.
I was curious if this is default behavior since going to wp-admin would cause certificate issues.
