In WP1.2 there is a preview pane that shows a preview of your article whenever you save it.

In WP1.2 in Write>Advanced Settings there is a checkbox for allowing comments.

If you are using wp_list_cats function to fetch your categories you can check the default settings at wp-includes>template-functions-category.php

You can try the latest release candidate of WP. It’s stable as far as my usage is concerned. You can see how plugins are integrated with the administration. Pretty simple but efficient.
