In reply to: Configure teaserI thought the teaser and the excerpt were two different things?
At the moment, whatever the default is, that’s what I’m using. What I’m talking about is when I write a post, my feed (in a reader, like the Wizz Reader in Firefox) shows the title and the first few words of the post. That’s the part that I’d like to be able to change sometimes, and choose another section of the post to display instead of the first few lines.
Because I’ve only just started, I’m not sure what passes that information to the readers and feeds. My blog address is https://www.freesitebuilder.co.uk/WordPress/ and I’m using Feedburner for the feed.
TIA

In reply to: Sticking to One ThemeHow can you tell which theme visitors are using?

In reply to: Uploading PluginsAre you running your blog on wordpress.com? (I didn’t realise for ages that www.remarpro.com (this site) and wordpress.com are two completely different sites!)
wordpress.com lets you have a WordPress blog, without the complex stuff of setting it all up and running it on your web host. But they only allow certain plugins – you can’t upload any plugin that you want (for security reasons).
www.remarpro.com (this site) lets you download the whole WordPress blog files, and upload it to a web host of your own (just like you do with a web site). You can add any plugins you like, but you have to set it up and run it yourself.

In reply to: Uploading PluginsYou can use your regular FTP program to copy the plugin(s) from your computer to the plugins folder on your website host. Then the plugin will appear in your dashboard (plugins section) and you can activate it.
Which FTP program are you using? (Or do you use a website to upload?)

In reply to: Weird in IE 7This is how I’ve been doing it. In my Write Post window, I highlight the word that I want to show as a link (perhaps a web site name), and click on the “link” icon just above the text area (two linked chains). That gives a pop-up box, where I type in the URL, and choose whether to load in a new window, or in the current window.
I’m using Firefox 2 on XP, so I don’t know if IE or other operating systems will be different.

In reply to: Should I change the font?I think my favourite font of all time is Palatino – it used to be very popular in printed books, but it doesn’t seem to be as popular now. I remember when books used to show the typeface details at the beginning – I really miss that.
Oh-oh, I’m wandering OT now, sorry! Thanks for all the input. But I’d better confess that I’ve left Comic Sans as the headings, for a bit of light relief. I only hope the Comic Sans Police don’t know where I live. ??

In reply to: Widgetising a themegolddave, could you give me a link to read about that, please?
otto42, I have alternative widgets for everything I want now – but the css is built on nested ULs (the link colours and backgrounds change according to how “deep” the LI is nested). I assume that this won’t work if I’m using a widgetised sidebar?
(My host has chosen this week to have major downtime problems, so I can’t play about with it as I’d like to!)

In reply to: Is there any need for Video TutorialsI started with WordPress a couple of weeks ago – I know video tutorials would have helped me. I also like to look at video tutorials before I commit to something like WP – I can look at the videos, and decide if it’s going to be within my abilities, and feel more confident about a new venture.

In reply to: Widgetising a themeThanks for that. Now I have a really silly question. How do I tell what’s a widget? I’ve added two, which were called widgets, but are javascript. I downloaded a sample widget from the WordPress widgets site that you mentioned, and that’s php.
So when is a widget not a widget?

In reply to: Displaying my posts on another siteSorry – found this post with “search”, and I didn’t notice it was resolved. Thanks for your help though!

In reply to: Displaying my posts on another siteI’ve been looking at CG-PowerPack, but is it possible to display feeds in an .html page? My blog is on the same server and domain as my “main” site, which is plain html. I’d like to display recent posts on my main site to encourage visitors to the blog.
TIA

In reply to: Missing welcome emailWell, no emails from WordPress.com at all – I’ve signed up twice, and used their contact form, but I can’t post on the forum for support until I get a password. I think I’ll have to abandon Akismet and try something else. ??

In reply to: Missing welcome emailThanks – I missed that difference! I thought the welcome email would be coming from .org, when I signed up for WP. Isn’t the internet wonderful? ??
