Actually, I have found the solution. It was the plugin, “installer”. But why it also affected wordpress.com is beyond me.

2nd. update. If you set a featured image on a new post that does seem to be the one which is shared by publize. However if you try to correct an already shared post which is showing a secondary image instead of the larger main one on the rest of social media by entering a featured image and then re-sharing it, the shared image in the post does not update on the rest of social media. In otherwords you have to change the URL (slug) to make it a totally different post.

Update. I’ve done it. I changed the URL of the post (added _1) and it shared with both FB and Google+, so I’ve deleted the erroneous posts from all social media. Problem not really solved of course. I imagine that the same problem will arise when I next try to share a post. In addition wordpress is now sharing with my FB timeline not with my business page even though sharing is set up using the page URL. Hehho!!

To puebits: No that’s not the problem. The image they ignore is the large one at the top of the blog (660×531). (and the same image when I set it as a featured image). The one they select is a medium one further down the post. (300×260). The fact that all shared posts have the same error makes me suspect that it’s a problem with the WP shared settings but I can’t see anything.

To. Andrew. I do use a theme (Pinboard), but I’ve used it for over a year with no problem. To share I simply use the sharing tab in Settings. Again it has worked perfectly up to now. To illustrate the point have a look at the blog post,https://living-in-the-loire.com/2014/09/01/loire-valley-wine-tours-loire-wine-tasting/ and then have a look at it shared on Google+. (I’ve already deleted the shared post from FB but the same thing happens in Google+) The photo you see of a wine tasting was the medium one half way down the post. The sharing process ignored both the initial, larger photo and the same photo set as a featured image. https://plus.google.com/u/0/+LeClosdesGuyonsLePuyNotreDame/posts/p/pub

Right. So! I’ve had a problem with that particular post in that the text refers to my main pic. which is also set as the featured pic.
When sharing, both FB and Google+ pick up a secondary image from further down the post. So, I’ve deleted that pic., deleted the shared post on FB and then tried to share the WP post again. Each time FB shows the same photo as it did before even though it is no longer on the post. Any comments!!

    Thanks Ian,
But as I said I have no longer even got the option. Insert/edit link has simply reverted to just that, a tag which enables me to insert a link. There are no popup options, in fact there are no options whatsoever.
Why my installed WP 3.9.1 is like this I have no idea and no-one seems capable of finding a solution.

Thank, tried that, no difference. In fact, as I said, I’ve not even got the possibility of using popup option. it’s disappeared.

Yes I know all that, as I said I’ve done all that, it’s the default response. But it doesn’t work.

You’re lucky. I can’t even see the popup admin window. Back to code I suppose. Unless I can find a half-decent plugin.
Don’t suppose anyone from wp. feels like making a contribution.

Great. The popup option has now disappeared altogether. I’ve just gone to try again and all you can now see is the basic add link window. Thank’s a bunch wp.

Have just noticed, although I need to confirm it, that it seems to work if I am using an URL from my blog, (ie from an external site), but not if I use a page from the same site. No idea what that means! What I do know is that I’m getting fed up of spending hours trying to work out what’s conflicting with what on every single update from wp or a plugin. I’m seriously thinking about going back to a normal CSS, html site.

Yes one of several rather obvious things that wp seems to have missed including the ability to save but not upload after editing an existing page.

    Thanks a lot,

Works perfectly without me doing anything.
