In reply to: Advertising blogI’d have to agree that you have some ‘contrast’ problems here.
For readability, I’d suggest these ideas:
– left/right columns needs to be lighter gray (or another complimentary colour)
– right column is too wide (perhaps to account for the ad size)
– the ad is too large … so as to not turn off your visitors on first sight, how about making it about 60% of its current size
– main content/body column in the middle needs to be wider (which fits with the right column narrowing a bit)Right now, and I apologize because I do not wish to offend – and I’m not trying to be mean or impolite – the site sort of screams commercial and ‘template’ … If you, the blogger, want’s to achieve an audience, where is that all important ‘personality’ aspect – your personality. Blogs are, after all, conversations … not sales pitches (at least not blatant sales pitches).
The beauty of a business blog that works is focusing on making the viewing experience pleasant and not another roadside billboard experience – literally. Your banner appears to be a road leading nowhere. And that, right now, is what your blog looks like. The only link list you might make right now is the one for ‘site designs to never launch’. I am just being honest with you. It is my opinion, that’s all.
The thing that will sell the blog is not the template/style, after all … it is the content of the writing. Your writing.
Just my two cents. Best of luck with your blog.

In reply to: Locked Out — Redirect on Login – Firefox/IEOh, I find things that ‘mention’ the problem. Not any solutions. Sorry if I did not make that clear.
The one example of using:
wp-login.php?login=name&pass=password
does get me there, but it won’t work for posting. Just bumps me back to login page. Nothing has been changed before this started happening. The only thing that did happen, and I do not know how/why was – I restarted my computer. Double clicked on the Firefox icon on the desktop and Firefox opened in Safe Mode. I changed that with the ‘run’ command they provide. Went through the uninstalls/extension dropping, etc. … still, nothing.
And, as I said, it is happening in IE, too.
Yes, I believe I am logged in… but, how to ‘unlogin’ and then get back to posting. And, it is only happening to me on ‘this’ computer. Weird? The laptop – on the same lan – is working fine.
I just don’t understand. I’ve cleared cache, dropped old cookies, i have no ‘author’ cookies, dropped histories, uninstalled firefox (although it happens in IE, too) re-installed firefox … nothing is working.
I’ve run out of things I know to try. ;o(

In reply to: Locked Out — Redirect on Login – Firefox/IEHas anyone else experienced this problem before?
I get it now for every instance of an admin page. And it keeps bumping me back to the login page.
wp-login.php?redirect_to=%2Fwordpress%2Fwp-admin%2Flink-manager.php
Thanks.

In reply to: Wikipedia co-Founder Blogs Using WordPress!!!Hello, TigerDE2,
I realize that his blog is two months old. However, if you read the blog it is a bit ‘spotty’ re: posting frequency. I believe that having more people visit him and engage in conversations will encourage him to keep up the site.
And, I searched these forums and did not find any mention of his choice of WordPress.
I write about Jimmy Wales because I am a fan / supporter of WordPress. When prominent people and sites choose WordPress, I believe it is important to (1) recognize that fact and (2) encourage others to visit those sites – perhaps engaging in conversations there.
I do not see a lot of ‘that kind’ of promotional/PR/marketing communications activity here.
Yes, I realize that this site is primarily for ‘user’ support issues. However, what better site could there be for reaching avid WP users and encouraging them to (a) see new sites and (b) participate in the promotion of WP by engaging in valuable conversations with prominent Internet figures, such as the co-founder of Wikipedia. Especially when WordPress already has a bit of a relationship with that site (or, more specifically – the MediaWiki engine).
In short, TigerDE2, I am just trying to be a positive influence and help.
Perhaps there could be a new “Main Theme” subject area of ‘Announcements’ or ‘Sightings’ devoted solely to news of WordPress achievements, coups and recent adoptions of the blogging platform. It may help to further promote an already positive project – WordPress.

In reply to: Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.The Author cookie fixed it on one of my blogs.
I was having this same problem and ‘only’ with Firefox. The site worked in IE, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera…. etc…
So, when I deleted the “Author’ cookie in Firefox, that made the site work again.
Many thanks for this thread, all of your answers, and the WP support forums because I was about to pull all my hair out. :o) And I don’t have that many left!

In reply to: Authors in Seperate Columns (get_posts())jdavida, I know it is possible.
Ask Alex King. I believe he suggested ways to create the code modifications that made the two blogs below possible. I cannot, however, tell you how it was done.
See LeftRightDebate.com and He sez, She sez.
I can point you to a person that has, and can, set it up before. They will do it for you – for a fee. And their code is proprietary. You will not be able to share it. Visit my blog and write to me there if you’re interested.Forum: Everything else WordPress
In reply to: Drupal vs. WordPresshey charle97, i was only talking about the Dean campaign worker ‘intra-internet’ sites … :o)
and macmanx, I agree – Drupal is great and so is Mambo. I have sites using both.
to clarify – e107 has an ease of setup and maintenance similar to the ease of WP (not completely, but pretty close). Instead of a ‘5 minute’ install, it is more like 10 minutes. and it has fast page loading speeds (if the theme/skin is not image heavy), which was one of the key concerns mentioned above.
emscd – if you are looking to do something ‘portal-like’ … here is one example of someone doing it with WP

In reply to: A WordPress blog makes the Top 10Thanks alphaoide! I hope the 100+ people that viewed this post … and all those that follow, will vote for the blog.
And, if anyone wants to help … please consider a link on your site to the voting link above. They need every vote they can get.
Plus, you’re helping to promote WordPress, too! ;o)

In reply to: A WordPress blog makes the Top 10well, no one has commented on it … but, i’d like to keep this thread alive … can anyone think of a ‘viral online campaign’ that might help them stay in the running for the award?
it would be good for WordPress to have one of their blogs recognized for such an award – Best Innovation … although the award is for the application that it is implemented for, it does speak well of WordPress for ease of use. Especially since they are using – essentially – an out of the box install and style.

In reply to: Lisa skinned my blog*grin* podz … yep, ‘by’ was funnier :o) but, thank you!
and, I imagine that she probably feels skinned after doing a dozen or so of these in a row ;o)
benkos …
re: the layout, well … i’m kinda partial to the left columns, but i see what you mean
as for the ‘seriousness’ of the style … there is a dropdown menu for a second skin (guess I should have mentioned that, huh? – it is in the far left column) … the other skin is a brighter orange/blue/white ‘less serious’ layout. so, visitors have their choice of ‘looks’
that ‘blockquote’ look is accomplished by hacking the BLOCKQUOTE identifier in the .css. Add this to, or adapt what you already have, with something like this:
line-height: 150%;
border: 3px double #725D4A;
background: #FBFAF9;
padding: 8px;
text-align: left;
I didn’t know how to do that either, but earlier (on my other skin) I learned that on most wordpress blogs (standard installations) you can easily type in the same ‘pathname’ pattern of your own blog on their sites (using their domain, etc.) and then you can see their CSS files … it is one way to learn CSS by just looking at examples and then experimenting on your own blog (of course, always keeping a backup of a ‘good’ wp-layout.css – just in case)
Thank you both for commenting. IMHO, Lisa does great work.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Comment spam & Human authenticationFor what it is worth, if you can get it to work and put it in a ‘package’ (easy to implement/hack/mod) or – even better – a plugin. I’d download and install it in a heartbeat.
Spam is frustrating and any tool that helps WP users combat it will be greeted with glee!

In reply to: WP 1.2.1 changed files in distroThanks for the list of files ‘truly’ being updated (as in – were changed).
I didn’t seek (or find) it until after going ahead and upgrading my site. Thought about looking, but just figured I’d
(a) backup my whole site,
(b) hold back my ‘modded/hacked’ files,
(c) backup the database, and then
(d) go back and ‘re-modify’ goofed up files after uploading.
Not a complaint, honest. The upgrade went without a problem (as far as I can tell).
I hope that in the future that list will be included in the e-mail sent to all subscribers/users (which was nice to recieve – thanks).
Other suggestions (if I may be so bold):
– the list of new files could be on the ‘Dev Blog/Developer’ front page where the announcement of this upgrade exists
– a brief explanation (for noobies explaining what, for devs and more seasoned users, are the obvious):
— backup all files
— backup the database
— make it a habit (in the future) to keep a complete list of
(a) all the files you’ve hacked / modified
(b) and what and where those changes were/are in each file
I just wanted to offer those suggestions. Perhaps, they could make the whole process a bit easier and less intimidating.
Many thanks to the developers of WordPress. Your blog is the best! I mean that! Just love it!
Thanks.
