For me rolling back to 3.5, fixed the critical error, though in that version thumbnails in the ‘select NextGen Featured Image’ selector are broken.

Can confirm that this has broken all NGG images and galleries on our site too.

We’ve discovered that the issue is that our test site used WP 3.1. Updating it to the current WP version (3.4.2) resolves the problems described above.
