No.. I did have some iframes (suing the ad: banner/image widget) but only in the left sidebar not in content. Removing them has no effect on the behavior.
However some further diagnostics suggest that the behavior was caused by the Google Adsense plugin. Specifically the Automated Mobile Ads. Switch this feature off and the theme starts working correctly. Topic Closed.
