Running on my own server, so no hosting service to worry about.The tiled galleries (silently) requiring Site Accelerator is probably the answer to why the images are cached on WordPress systems.
None of the images are anything approaching 250M (I have a 15M upload limit set).
The XML_RPC URL does respond as you say – to me.
Externally it is blocked – too many probes trying to break stuff.I can try unblocking it for a while, and see what happens.

There was one previously, which also received no response.
I have found it impossible to disable acceleration, and even worse, the wordpress sites are returning 400 errors for more than half of my images.
My website is not just degraded, it is rendered useless.

This doesn’t appear to be the case. I have image CDN disabled, but images are still being retrieved from WP servers rather than mine.
This is a problem for me, because I use AWS servers as VPN end-points to test the site from different locations, but the WP servers appear not to like AWS IP addresses, returning a 400 code for every image request.
