I must say that right now I am quite dissatisfied with the FORUM. It seems to me that if a moderator takes on a topic, they should commit to seeing it through or getting it to someone who can/will.
I feel that I’ve been dropped on this one, even after I provided all the information requested.
I’m putting this in here because I believe in the concept behind open source software, albeit concerned about support. This experience merely underscores my concern.

OK, here is some more info.
First, I was using a third-party theme. So, I went back to one of the standard themes provided with WordPress. Then switched back to my NEW wp-admin and wp-includes. When I went to the wp-admin to log in, I was able to log in (wasn’t before), then it told me it needed to update the database. It had not gotten to this point previously.
I STOPPED HERE – to hear back from you – BEFORE I update the database, which might take me to a point that I won’t know how to temporarily recover from.
Help!
OK, I’ve renamed the new wp-admin and wp-includes files as NEWwp-admin and NEWwp-includes, and then changed the names of the old files back from OLDwp-admin and OLD wp-includes.
Thus I have essentially restored the site except am still using some of the new wp-content files from 3.4.
I am now able to log into my site and the site looks OK.
AND I AM AFRAID TO TRY AN UPGRADE AGAIN.
HELP!
No, that did NOT fix anything. Exactly the same error. Can’t even get to the login screen.
Yes, VancouverWoodsmith.com is my site. You may be seeing my old website pages.
Now what?
BTW, there is NO general-template.php on the site – or in the saved backup of the site.
