I followed the instructions sent by my previous host about making a full back-up. I have downloaded all the files from my old cpanel, into a zipped file on my pc. I have unpacked the file and used the homedir/public-html files to find the old wordpress files

how, in fact, do we “connect a new installation to the old database/tables?”

Yes, it did resolve it. I’m sorry I didn’t answer, because of a change of web host…been very busy with trying to upload or view the old theme, which I downloaded via FTP, from a file manager and now can’t see!

and I’ve changed my theme too, to Follet and it’s child-theme Alétheia.

I’m having more success at getting the style I want. Thanks to you for introducing me to the css rules etc. I may come back to using Singl later

no, I mean the one above the main body. It looks about 20px tall.
I think it’s related to the page title

I thought it might be some gallery/widget plugins but I disabled or deleted all of them and it’s still there.

I may have fixed this by changing the padding from whatever, to a bigger number (440)

I’ve added a typekit plugin for the fonts and will update when have had time to use it

thanks to another thread I answered the question..big thanks to paulwp

his fix was:

#header {background-repeat: no-repeat;}

in Alétheia, I needed to also add ‘main-‘ in front of ‘header’
so:
‘#main-header {background-repeat: no-repeat;}’

and this went straight into the css stylsheet which is not too long to find where.

My attempt to hide the site title on three pages is still not working, but everything else looks to be how it was before.

I’m still stuck at almost every move I make, though, and am getting a bit cheesed off trying to design nicer pages with no money. Not sure if it’s worth the effort.

am looking at Serif Webplus free starter edition today, and then I think I’ll go and find a hedge to crawl into
