Duh guess what! I just figured out my own mistake:

The category won’t show in the Link (blogroll) widget unless the category is being used by one of your chosen links. If the category is dormant/not in use, it won’t show up in the drop down menu within the widget.

Okay I’ll give that a try. Clearly I don’t understand the theory behind your assessment although I do get the efficiency of the remedy. I find my ignorance highly frustrating.

Besides being spoon fed clues on forums,(for which I am very grateful to those willing to respond), is there any other resources that by further study will allow me to be more self-sufficient?

They had been working before and I tried a different theme for a while in pursuit of the process of learning more about WP. Could I have toggled something unknowingly? How is it, if so, that I broke the permalink? Also, how can I determine if they are broken?
