thanks, that helped a bit, BUT, now my own navbar is laying above the submenus of the admin panel, although its z/index is way below the panel z-index…

Screenie, in case it′s not clear:

The wpadmin panel overlaps my fixed navbar, so I′d like to detect it and adjust my navigation bar whenever the admin panel is displayed on the frontend.

is_admin returns false in the case shown in the pic :/

no, I mean viewing my pages while in admin mode.

In that case, you have that admin ‘ribbon’ on top of your screen, and I’m looking for a way to detect that one.

Hm, for some reason I get that fatal error despite of having <?php wp_head();?> in my header.

Maybe it’s because my theme is simply inherited from twentyeleven.

I’d be very thankful for some hints!
