All the plugins works probably the same way as we all use the same php imagejpeg()?funtion which creates the new watermarked?JPEG?file from your given source image, using the quality you set (100 for the best).
There is no other way, I am sorry for that.
Anyway I don’t think the work I did for FREE and offer to anybody worths only a 2 stars, even if no plugins did what you expect…

I just test a new install on a new website and I cannot reproduce the same error, it seems working for hundred of people..
I would like to help you understand what’s wrong, could you please let me know your running php version? Could you please try to re-install it and click watermark image. If there is no watermark image, it is asking you to upload one (but never has the err message of empty path).
I wold like to understannt too what’s is happening ??
