@threadi thanks for the helpful input! We determined that the issue was caused by the .htaccess file. During our recent website server migration to an Nginx server running Apache, we overlooked the .htaccess file, which contained outdated plugin code. To resolve this, we deleted the file and replaced it with the default WordPress version. This solution worked, and the PDF files are now loading correctly.

We’ve reviewed the permissions, and the new files appear to align with the old working files. We think it might be the .htaccess or Ngnix since we are Using Apache.

@vmarko It’s a strange issue since we believe the permissions are set correctly, so my next assumption was that the .htaccess file might be the cause.

I am wondering if you could help me with another issue which could be related to the .htaccess file and Nginx.

We are getting 404 error pages when we upload a PDF to a directory called /policies via FTP, see here: https://www.cdsbeo.on.ca/policies/413-Progressive_Discipline.pdf

It’s odd because other pdf files in that folder load just fine, see here: https://www.cdsbeo.on.ca/policies/404-Use_of_Service_Animals_in_Schools.pdf

And the permissions are set the same for both files. Could this issue be caused by our .htaccess file or Nginx ?

@vmarko oh I see.. you are correct in that we are using Nginx+Apache… I will go ahead and delete the .htaccess file after I make a backup of it.

So just to understand.. since our website is hosted on a server that is using Nginx+Apache, does that mean the .htaccess file is obsolete?

We do not use any other plugin for adding compression or browser Caching at this time.

The PHP version is 7.4.16
The server type is Apache/2.4.6

I confirm that I have no pages or posts named “Download”/”Downloads”

I have flushed the permalinks.

@raldea89 I’ve installed and activated the Trouble shooting plugin.

Then I activated the default Twenty Twenty WordPress theme, to determine if my theme was causing the issue.

As you can see in the screenshot, I only have 2 plugins enabled, and the Download Monitor plugin is still not showing properly in the backend of WordPress.

@agent3w I tried installing your version through FTP, I get the same result. I also tried installing the developers plugin through FTP and still not working.

I may use your alternative plugin suggestion “Download Manager” if I cannot solve this problem soon.
