You don’t need to upgrade anything.

Hi made21, the update is already in the queue waiting for an admin to approve it.
There is nothing we can do to to speed up this process.

In the latest version (1.0.8) you can see the sidebar until 1024px. That covers most of small desktop screens.
Looks like you were using the old version.

I don’t understand, that menu in the sidebar is a regular WordPress menu.

Like on any other theme, go to your Admin Panel > Appearance > Menus you create your menu.
Can’t be easier.

I think this is an irresponsible review.

You can display as many categories as you like. You can see the demo site:

But you have to select one category to differentiate the portfolio items from the blog items.

You can create a Menu and only show 3 items.

This is under Appearance>>Menus.

The theme is always two columns.
Maybe you didn’t add any widget into the Sidebar.

You can add widgets in your Admin Panel>>Appearance>>Widgets
