That was fast! Thanks! Yes, this at least looks like what I wanted. Let me try it out and I will post back later. But either way, thank you so much. I did a search for ‘xml’ in the plugins directory, how come I didn’t find this?

Hi Ipstenu. Thanks for responding. Yes, they are similar, but one big difference to me is that trackbacks give you a teaser/excerpt so you have some idea what the connection is between the two posts, and I like that. Pingbacks, at least the ones I’ve seen, just say “Pingback” and give a link. For me, the more information the better. So even though they are similar I’d rather have trackbacks.

I’ve also read in these forums that some of this is theme dependent. Is there an easy way to get trackbacks instead of pingbacks, automatically, in 3.2.1, 3.3, and on into the future?

Well, I made all the folders manually. They are all set to 755. I still can’t upload, but now I have a different error message:

“wordpress 2.jpg” has failed to upload due to an error
The uploaded file could not be moved to /var/www/html/wp-content/uploads/2011/11.

Note it no longer asks about the server being writeable. But this error message doesn’t tell me anything, like why or what to do about it.

So I went back and switched all folders to 777, and now I can upload. Don’t know why the host/server setup would require this but short of moving (which I am thinking about for other reasons) I don’t think there’s much I can do about it.

    Thanks, Ipstenu.

Thx, nocnokneo, you have saved me hours of frustration.

Be sure to read nocnokneo’s post in the thread dustycat mentions. His solution worked for me, not changing the options table.

It seems to work fine now. Thx for your patient assistance.

First, thanks to both of you for your interest.

    Andrea
    – in order to deal with this issue, I was referencing an htaccess for apache.

    Ipstenu
    – I am not using a stack. The backstory there is even more long and convoluted, but that part works now so far as I can tell. This problem only comes up when I try to log back in after creating a network per the instructions.

Do you think I’d be better off starting over with a new install and naming it something without spaces, or slogging this out for what I will learn?

    #LoadModule reqtimeout_module modules/mod_reqtimeout.so
    LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
    LoadModule setenvif_module modules/mod_setenvif.so
    #LoadModule speling_module modules/mod_speling.so

mod_rewrite is enabled as far as I know. But I don’t see an htaccess file in the Apache folder.

If your webserver’s URLs are not directly related to physical file paths, you will need to use RewriteBase in every .htaccess file where you want to use RewriteRule directives.

Ok, so I think what this is telling me is I need an htaccess with a rewrite rule telling the server to look in localhost/Semantic%20Law.net and not C:/apache. Does that seem reasonable to you? If so, I’m still not 100% on how to do it. Can you tell me how to do that?

    all 500 internal server error

    (@natcolley)

I changed the name of the folder to take out the space, adjusted the url accordingly, but now I just get 500 errors. Is this progress or should I start over (or give up)?

I have a similar issue with 3.2.1. Tonight I got the ‘error establishing a database connection’ upon editing wp-config to allow multisite on my host. I sent a message to my host about this and while I was waiting went ahead and tried to do the same thing on my home machine so the two would eventually be in sync. But when I finished the network install and went to log in, I got the 500 error.

Andrea, after reading your post I went back to check and there are 11 tables in the wp database at my host and 17 on my machine here. I assume the extra six are because it crashed a little later in the process, but I don’t know that for sure.

This is a new install and a new site, so there are no plugins in use yet.

I am very interested in how to resolve vcantrell’s issue and will be following this topic.

p.s. – of course a user should be able to limit his or her exposure to the posts of a single subdomain, whether by tag, category, or search.

    Andrea,
You seem to be something of the local expert on multisite. I thought I knew what I was doing but I keep seeing more possibilities which make me want to re-organize my site plan, but if I keep doing that I’ll never get started. Here’s a couple of simple question for you while I wait for my testing site to behave:
    1) In multisite, are the categories of one blog shared across all others? Is that an admin setting? Same for tags: are they shared by default across the network? Somehow I came into this assuming categories were not but tags were. I may have gotten that from wordpress.com.

2)Is there a meaningful difference between custom fields and custom taxonomies?

3)Maybe it would help if you knew what I was after? I want people to be able to search tags, fields, and or taxonomies across the entire network, but each blogs categories are their own. That should be possible. Is it?

    Thx

Ok, I found this finally by changing my search terms:

Other than turning off my firewall I have not tried all these options yet, so I will go back to that and return if I am still frustrated.

    Partial solution and new problem.

By putting quotes (‘escaping’?) around my Base name I solved the 500 error and was taken to the log in, however, I can’t log in. The screen does not shake back and forth the way it does when your credentials are wrong – which they aren’t because they are saved – but the screen does not change and take me to the dashboard. What could this be?
