I found the problem. I am using the plugin NextGEN Gallery Optimizer by Mark Jeldi. This plugin does not appear to work with the current release of NextGen.

I am also using NextGEN Gallery by Photocrati Version 2.0.57. I will download and try the update. I will report back.

I am also unable to write directory: I get this when I try to upload pictures:

Unable to write to directory WINABSPATHwp-content/gallery/sdm-club-photos. Is this directory writable by the server?

I am using a windows based WordPress vs. 3.8.1
