  • OK, I think I should post an update.

I will stand corrected, it is GoDaddy that creates the issue with this BackWPup plugin.

I have 2 clients, 3 WordPress sites that use GoDaddy as their website host. One client does “not” use the managed wordpress system offered by GoDaddy, and the other client with 2 WordPress sites uses the “Managed WordPress system in GoDaddy.

The major difference between these two clients and their websites is the “Managed WordPress”.

According to GoDaddy, what we both figure is that BackWPup plugin attempts to access some core files that the Managed WordPress secures or limits access. Where a different backup plugin does not, and as a result works fine under the Managed WordPress system.

So, I hope the developer of this plugin reads this and works to overcome this problem because even a premium version of their plugin will be useless under these conditions.

If you have a Managed WordPress package with GoDaddy, this plugin will likely not work, as of this date.

No, its not GoDaddy, as much as I hear negative things about them. I used BackWPup with one client’s WordPress who is hosted by GoDaddy and it worked fine, yet with a second client I get the “Not expected HTTP response …”

I did deactivate all other plugins and that did not make any difference, the error continued to occur.

Since it worked with one client and not another, being that the second was done at 7 AM PST, that could be a bad time with GoDaddy, so I will leave it and return later and try again.

I can’t find a way to delete this entire post.

So I marked it CANCELED and closed it.

Does anyone know the answer to my request?

Elkapro: As per your link, your site shows images in the slider. I do not know if you wanted the narrow version of the slider or the wide.

If you want the screen wider version of the Slider, Go to “Appearance – Customize – Theme Options – Home Page, then in that side panel for Home Page settings, make sure “Message – Check to enable intro on home page.” is unchecked and above it the “Enable Full-Width Slide” button is set to On.

Otherwise it all good already. (could be you already got the answer and fixed it. Also remember to refresh your browser to see new settings and if that does not work, clear the cache of the browser and refresh).

    Now marked as resolved

I have the same or similar problem. Some pages end up blank, nothing on them, no PHP error displayed, nothing. Basically I get the WordPress “White page of death”. This is with the default settings when installed.

What is the answer to this?

I had to go back and re-read your plugin description in light of what you just said and here is my take on this.

This plugin requires the user (as myself) to write custom PHP files to make it work.

Then, the plugin description is poorly written, the use of the word “custom” in the description does not refer to the user having to write custom PHP files, but it refers to the plugin doing it via the users data input into text fields etc. Just because you mentioned “developers” and “web designers” in the header of the description, the way you used the word “custom” was out of context to them and did not apply to them having the write their own custom PHP files. That should have been made more clear.

So, I get from this that this plugin is not for general use by just anyone, it should only be used by users who can write PHP and make their own custom pages as you suggested I do.

I don’t know if you design web pages for people and charge them for your services, but I do and know for a fact, that the time spent to write PHP files to make a plugin work properly is a costly affair and does not attract customers if anyone wants to promote a web design business, especially at $60-80 an hour (cheapest rates).

The time I spent trying to get this plugin to work I cannot charge the customer because the plugin was expected to work, based on your description (without your current input) and my time I spend trying to work this plugin was without any idea that I was suppose to write custom PHP files. In short, wasted time and money.

    Kinda upsets me.

Simply put, I write PHP only if I have to, and only if the customer wants me to, that they then pay for my services, else the time and cost is not worth it.

I appreciate your input on what to do, but since the customer won’t pay for this extra work means I don’t spend time dealing with this plugin. Does that place all this into perspective in terms of a web design business?

    Thank-you for your time.

Kind of curious, is this a bug or glitch in the plugin and is your next update going to address it?

    Here is the link.>> https://www.obcauto/wordpress
Click “car sales” in the top menu. (The site is not live yet).

Where would I check or insert the PHP code, which file?

Well, burn my britches, I thought the web host automatically changed everything to version 5.4 and they did not, the website was still set at 5.2 because they still allowed the legacy 5.2 to run.

Now all seems to work, thanks. ??

Here is how the custom link works in this plugin.

    1. In the settings for “Adv.Slider”, in your chosen “Template” tab (open the tab for the list of settings), scroll down to the label “Title & Excerpt”. In the settings under this label, find “link type” and select “custom” in the drop list. Then click “save” for that section.

    2. Go to the post you want the custom link to apply. In the post (not page, its the “posts” you made, the slider does not include pages), make sure the “screen options” at the top (click that tab to open) has all options selected (which is best), then close the tab.

    3. Scroll the page down to find “Custom Fields”. I believe you will likely see only one custom field already there called “single_layout”. Just below that, click the “Add New Custom Field”. There is a drop list there, open it and see if you can find “advps_custom_link”.

If that selection is not there, just below that field box is “create new” click that and the drop box just above it becomes a text field. Insert into it “advps_custom_link”. , then to the right in the long “value” box, enter the URL you want the post to include. If the link is within your own WordPress site, you can remove “https://domainname.com”

    Example:
    URL is “https://www.domainname.com/pages/this-page-to-read”

change to>> “/pages/this-page-to-read” (note: do not include quotes, that makes the value as invalid)

Once the value is completed, click the “Add Custom Field” button and you will see it appear just above the “single_layout” one.

    4. Click “update” for that post and its done.

Note, for this plugin, this custom field only applies to the title of the post you see displayed in the slider, it does not make the entire image or text description become a link (which it should since on mobile screens makes clicking the linked item better to “tap”).

I have not received any answer yet and I have to finish a project for a customer. The least you could have done was tell me you have no answer to the problem long ago, so people like me don’t waste time waiting a week for your response.

I deleted the plugin and working on another plugin instead.

Hope you find the answer to the issue, as I see it being a common issue.

By the way, you look like “Mike Rowe” of the TV show series “Dirty Jobs”. You just need to curve that cap peak a bit more. ?? (https://www.tv.com/shows/dirty-jobs/)
