Thanks for the feedback, meanwhile I have figured out that WP Rocket was causing the issue and prevented the 301 redirect.
I had to delete the cache folder via FTP and now the behaviour is as expected again, it seems related to this issue:
https://github.com/wp-media/wp-rocket/issues/6094
In the next days we will see if that was the fix and Google is reconsidering the choice of canonical URLs. Yet it is unclear to me how Yoast had injected the main page as canonical URL into the “Nothing found” page displayed by WP Rocket.
I will mark as resolved for now anyway.

In reply to: [Polylang] Conflicting rewrite rules breaking single postsI think my issue seems also related to this. My settings:
- The language is set from the directory name in pretty permalinks
- Hide URL language information for default language UNCHECKED
This should be the correct URL: https://www.wroclawguide.com/de/das-beste-fruhstuck-in-breslau/ and here the correct canonical URL is set as well (same as this URL)
However for some reason, Google found them also without /de/:
https://www.wroclawguide.com/das-beste-fruhstuck-in-breslau/
This URL is not leading to a 404 error or redirect to the correct URL, but to sort of blank search page with “nothing found” and then Google takes the canonical URL from that which always points to the main starting page.
When logged in as admin, a redirect happens.
As result, all our pages are getting removed from the index from google and replaced by the main starting page.
In my view, either the redirect should be enabled for non admins and regular users, or the page shown should be a 404 error, or alternatively at least the canonical URL should be removed from these pages…
This is quite critical due to the de-indexing by Google.
I proceeded with the error analysis here and it seems that there is an incompatibility with Polylang as multi lingual plugin. I set up the page to always show the language (either /de/ or /en/) in the permalink.
The correct URL in the example would be
https://www.wroclawguide.com/de/mit-dem-zug-nach-breslau/
and Yoast is also generating the correct canonical URL then. However when I try to open this URL without /de/ then I am not getting a 404 error or redirect – this probably would be optimal – but I am ending up at a page that looks similar to the search results when nothing got found.
This page (https://www.wroclawguide.com/mit-dem-zug-nach-breslau/) then is generating a canonical URL of the starting page and instead of the correct URL with the /de/ included, Google is considering the start page as alternative URL to the blog post.
Now, I tried to use a filter to remove the canonical URL from the search results, but on the page above it still shows the start page.
Is there any way I can set up Yoast in a way that only regular blog posts, pages, categories etc are getting a canonical URL, but not these sort of “undefined” pages?
I found out some possible root cause here, but still need support for that. I am using the option “The language is set from the directory name in pretty permalinks” and have Hide URL language information for default language unchecked.
It seems that Google is aware of the URL https://www.wroclawguide.com/das-beste-fruhstuck-in-breslau/ while it should be the correct one https://www.wroclawguide.com/de/das-beste-fruhstuck-in-breslau/ with the /de/ in the URL.
Now https://www.wroclawguide.com/das-beste-fruhstuck-in-breslau/ does NOT return a 404 error as it would be supposed to, neither it redirects to the correct URL via 302/301, but it shows the search result page with “nothing found” – and that has a canonical URL injected from the Yoast plugin (that does not appear on regular search result pages).
In my view, Polylang still has an issue with the re-write rules. With my settings above, it should either return a 404 issue for the URL not including any language code, or perform the redirect to the correct page… What can be done here to fix that?
yes, suddenly we are losing the ranking for most important pages in German and it seems Google is only indexing English.
This is what Search Console is telling us:
Page is not indexed:?Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than userThis is pretty bad and we do not know how to fix it ??

In reply to: [UpdraftPlus: WP Backup & Migration Plugin] Dropbox does not authoriseI deleted the plugin and re-installed and it worked ??
I do not want to change to any other consent plugin as ours is fully customized and configured, many others could not live up to the complexity, different languages, etc.
I have added the request a feature request as well. I‘d like to use my own consent check and gtag code snippet, but the eCommerce analytics integration should come through your plugin.
Hi there, not really – it is not about offering opt-out, it is about getting opt-in before any cookie can legally be set. If the user does not opt-in, the script can not run. And the existing Borlabs Cookie solution we have is supporting that well.
We checked with Borlabs directly, but the code will need to be set as opt in and Google Analytics should not be used with the script blocker, that is intended to block YouTube and other external embedded links etc
In that case, probably many people won’t be able to use your plugin when they want to decide to insert the gtag code in their own way. We will deinstall it then if no option like this is planned.
Hello, we are already using Borlabs Cookie as consent plugin. If the user accepts, the gtag is triggered and loaded by this plugin. Is there any option planned in the future where we could keep using our existing plugin? this is required to fulfill all legal requirements. Many other plugins with GA4 have no problem that the tag is loaded in another way and not by their own plugin.
Thanks!
Hello,
I cannot use your plugins to include the Gtag, because in Europe we need to ask first for the consent from the user, and this cannot be done with your plugin. These are the current settings, but still it does not work at all:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mosx6oi4dzasebb/analytics.jpg?dl=0
The Gtag is included correctly and all other events etc are recorded correctly, it is only your plugin not working and providing the e-commerce data.
Thanks!
Hello,
I have set the GA4 property ID in the plugin settings but no eCommerce transactions end up in Analytics. The site tag is managed by another plugins and it should stay like it. Any idea why nothing might come up in Analytics?
or do I need to activate the “Use Global Site Tag” Option? But then the tag will be added a second time, correct?
and strangely, despite my new GA4 ID, transactions show still up in the old UA set up although I replaced that property ID in your plugin settings.
thanks!

In reply to: [Yoast SEO] Wrong Website Name Displayed in Search ResultsHi Yuval
Thanks, after purging the cache it seems to work now! Will monitor for few more days but thanks a lot for the rapid feedback!
Thx,
MirkoHi there, any news on the bug fix? It also seems that page views are counted twice – for most pages it is twice as much as unique page views which is quite suspicious.
