I think doing a data import to a live transactional database without testing first might be your problem.
The best import tool in the world can fail and so running on a live website without being confident that it will work is the mistake.
Have no comment on the plugin as I have not used it but if I were to give it a go on a live database without backing up or testing first I would be blaming myself ??
