I think I’ve finally sorted it.
Thanks everyone for your help.

OK I have now managed to import my site via the wordpress importer within hostgator.
However now when I type in my new URL I get the following message…
“Error establishing a database connection”

Is there something I’m missing here?

I’ve tried uploading my site to hostgator via the duplicator app however the upload tool in hotgators file manager/cpntrol panel has a max upload limit of 500mb and the archive file that duplicator has built for me is 546mb.
Does anyone have any advice or suggest a better way of doing this?

So if I do manage to get all of my posts imported into Wamp, what’s my next step switching my host to Hostgator?

OK so I tried using the wordpress importer to upload the XML file into wordpress locally on wamp.
It kind of worked but it only carried across the posts up to July of this year, despite the fact I have been posting up til yesterday?!

Hi Mark, I have also now completed the steps to set up a database and installed the wordpress software.
So I’m looking to import my file into this database on wamp.

Just to add, I’ve redirected my namecheap domain to the hostgator name servers.
And I’ve created an SQL database on hostgator.
So I’m just unsure how to transfer the info from my wordpress.com XML file over to the new server.

Yes I meant a wordpress.com site to a self hosted wordpress site – sorry for not being clearer.
I seen that there is an option to have someone do this for you but ideally I would like to learn to do it all myself.

I bought my domain on namecheap and my new host will be hostgator, so I’m looking to move my wordpress.com site to the new host.

I downloaded my wordpress.com site as an XML file and then I downloaded wamp as I wanted to test everything offline before putting it up live.
This is where I find myself stuck.
I’m not sure how to import/export into wamp or hostgator.
