Would it be possible to lead the traffic to 410 error page instead of 404?
I ask this because, I have +400k spam pages indexed that shouldn’t be indexed. When the crawlers return to the indexed pages now they will get the 404 error meaning “the page is missing”, which they interpret as possibly temporary issue. After the crawlers encounter the 404 few more times for the same link, they will drop the page from the index. But with 410 code being “permanently deleted” they would drop the indexed page right away. So the clean up process or de-indexing spam indexed pages will be much faster with 410 than 404.
