In reply to: modmat – Posting ability removed in permalinkUrgh, never mind, I had comments off on the one incoming link I was checking. The theme still deletes the hyperlinks when listing posts by category though. The default themes don’t.

In reply to: modmat – Posting ability removed in permalinkActually, the posting ability works if you go to the hyperlink from within the blog, but a link to the hyperlink from outside the blog doesn’t show any ability to add a comment.

In reply to: Changing Permalinks setting crashes entire siteIt turns out that it really WAS an internal error. HostMySite had to do something to activate permalinks.

In reply to: AT&T/Yahoo installed 2.0.1 – Who does the upgrade? Thanks,
But I’ve since moved to Bluehost in order to escape Yahoo’s poor implementation of WordPress.

In reply to: Leaving Yahoo Hosting Advice/Concerns.htaccess should be the very last thing to worry about… It will NOT efect the move in any way. That file is used ONLY if you want the so-called nice permalinks.
Sort of an important ONLY…
But to answer part of the original question, I’d look ahead to where you are moving and check to see if they offer a variety of levels of service. I moved from Yahoo to Bluehost and now wish I’d selected a different destination. Not because Bluehost is bad at what they do, but because they only offer shared hosting.
Shared hosting means you share a server with a lot of other websites. There are two higher levels of service – VPS (virtual partitioned server) and dedicated server. If you think your traffic might go up dramatically in the near future, try to find a host that offers all three levels of service so you can upgrade on the fly (more or less) without moving your domain.
Speaking of which, be aware that moving a domain away from Yahoo/Melbourne IT takes the full eight days from the time you figure out how to make the official move request. Yahoo will say it’s Melbourne’s job, Melbourne will say it’s Yahoo’s job. By default, the domain will move at the end of the eight day waiting period.

In reply to: Best wordpress video blogs?I wouldn’t call mine the best either, but it’s working nicely in terms of integrating a Brightcove video player into a WordPress blog.

In reply to: Updating WordPress in YahooHeh,
I never even started actually, I decided early on I didn’t want to risk staying at Yahoo. They don’t allow access to the .htaccess file, and I got the distinct impression they are sorry they ever hosted ANY WordPress blogs because of the number of help requests.
In retrospect I wish I’d moved to a hosting service that offers all three levels of service – shared, virtual partition, and dedicated. Moving the domain from Yahoo/IT Melbourne was a nightmare. With a host that has all three levels you can upgrade on the fly if you need more capacity.
FWIW, Bluehost is strictly shared hosting and seems to offer very high capacity in terms of storage and transfers, but they throttle you on CPU cycles.

I gave up and moved to Bluehost.

In reply to: CPU OverloadDo a Google on: Bluehost CPU quota exceeded
That will lead to a lot of discussion about this topic. Although Bluehost offers a lot of capacity in terms of space and bandwidth, they throttle you on the CPU cycles. (I know you may not be on Bluehost, but the issue is likely the same.)

In reply to: Are there people I can hire to troubleshoot my wordpress blog?I joined the wp-pro list and made several good contacts. I ended up doing a Google search on WordPress and the name of the city where I live, and found someone local that I could work with. So you might try that too.
And you’re right, at some point it makes more sense to get help.

In reply to: How to add ? Previous Page — Next Page ?Huh?
The Codex says:
“WordPress defines “next page” as the “next page toward the past”.”
? Previous Page — Next Page ?
So older posts are pointed to as being to the right, or am I missing something? And is there a way to reverse it?

In reply to: How to add ? Previous Page — Next Page ?Ah, thanks, I keep forgetting about the special meaning of the word ‘page’. I got it to work by placing the code in the footer.php file. But it sure seems backwards to have older posts pointed to the right and newer posts pointed to the left.
Thanks!
