You can use them for SEO purposes without displaying them.

I guess that’s my question though, what SEO purposes can tags and categories be used for?

Yeah, that does look like a good one. I almost linked that but didn’t want to recommend something I haven’t tried myself. Let us know how it works!

If you go to Dashboard>Design>Theme Editor and open the Sidebar.php file, you should see the formatting for each sidebar title. For example, mine are each:

    <h6>Blogroll</h6>

So if I style the h6 text it will show up that way in the sidebar. Even though I’ve renamed Blogroll to something else in the widget, it still works to style the new title text. You could also replace h6 with something else, but you’ll need to be more careful when editing this file.

Edit: These files are probably theme-specific so you might not have the exact same structure, but the general idea should apply.

Sorry to have to revive this post, but I can’t find CQS listed in the plugins as having its own forum.

I’ve added Sphere and ShareThis links at the bottom of each post. They show up as plain text in the archive listings. It’s just a matter of tidy housekeeping, but I was wondering if there’s a way to exclude them from the Archives listing. If you go to my site (linked in my user name) and click on ‘August 2008’ in the sidebar, you can see the setup.

No biggie if it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

Do a search on ‘Flash video player’ and you should get a lot of hits. Also see the list of related searches that Google will provide. There are a lot of pre-compiled SWFs out there that might work, but if you want to have complete control over the look and operation of the player, then you have to have Flash Pro – either 8 or CS3. This all assumes you want to use a Flash player, WMV and Quicktime are also options.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of time building and configuring a player, or working out how to populate it, then you might also look at the Brightcove service. They provide several video players and an easy way to arrange the video lineups.

I’m using the Flash player from Earth Science Agency, and then customizing it in Flash 8 Pro.

Cheers yeap I’m looking into that.. so Backlinking is important – at the moment I’m just backlinking to Blog directories… is that a good Idea?

I don’t know how valuable backlinking is, link building usually focuses on getting other sites to link to yours. The ‘value’ and number of those links helps determine how the search engines rank your page.

Google ‘SEO link building’, and ‘SEO Consultants’, and variations on those. Read the articles on link building and keywords. Great content isn’t enough if nobody knows you’re out there.

Hmm, WP glitched and said Whoops, then double posted. Mods- feel free to remove either one.

Okay, thanks. I hadn’t thought of it as separating content and presentation, but you’re right. I was originally doing it for ‘dramatic effect’ on a single page. But it could just as easily be done with a couple of CSS style rules. Which is what I will do next time…

Yeah, that’s how I’ve been doing several blanks lines made with breaks. It works, and not. What’s the best way to create several lines of blank space?

    Otto –

I’m not the original poster, but I’ve experienced this as well.

It seems to come and go. Inserting < br / > (properly formatted, it works fine here if I write it correctly!) or “<p>” doesn’t have the expected effect, the white space is collapsed. I had it on one of my pages and then apparently did something that made the problem go away. I suspect there’s something in the theme CSS that is doing it to “<p>”, but it’s odd that < br / > would just flat out stop working.

Someone with more smarts than I showed me how to do this, but I use custom fields to insert meta data into the page header, and they also insert the same text into the post heading.

So at my site (linked in my user name) the purple text under the post title is pulled from a custom field. And, if you view page source, you’ll see the same text as a meta description tag in the page header. There’s a second custom field to add meta keywords to the page header.

Yeah, this can all be done with various plugins, but I prefer to work closer to the code to avoid update issues with plugins.

Otto42: @moonbatwingnut: Just install a copy of phpMyAdmin in your own website space and you can do anything to the database you want.

I set up my domain without WordPress, then added WordPress several weeks later. Then had my host point my domain to WordPress. I also have my IP address, where I have phpMyAdmin access to a different MySQL database than WordPress, but not WordPress at all. According to HostMySite, WordPress and the IP address are on two different servers.

When you say “install in your own website space” that would have to be the WordPress server to do any good. Is that what you meant?

I ask, because the maintenance they did reversed itself and I’d like better control.

    Thanks!

Although there are ways to edit the meta widget itself, the most common advice I’ve seen from the moderators is to create a text widget and put the links in that. If you Right-click>View Page Source you can copy/paste from the existing meta widget and then edit out the links you don’t want. Put the new text widget in the sidebar and remove the meta widget.

moshu, one of the moderators, made a plugin for that:

    https://moshublog.com/2007/10/30/custom-query-string-reloaded-for-wordpress-23-with-tag-support/

I use it and it works well.
