From Bluehost support:

I’ve reset the password for the MySQL username wp-config.php is using to the password wp-config.php is trying to use. The blog is now displaying.

I’ve asked how this could have occurred and will update if I get an answer.

I’d better bring learning PHP to the top of my todo list. :o)

Mine has not self repaired. I’ve run a database repair in cPanel to no avail. Asked Bluehost to check the problem but had no reply after almost 24 hours..

That user is me – I’m the only user. I can’t do anything because I can’t access the site except through my host’s control panel.

My knowledge of server side scripting is near zero, so the control panel isn’t much use.

I have a backup of the database for the blog. I’m considering removing that blog’s installation, setting up a new WordPress installation then importing the database.

Should have kept backups of my modified template files. :o(

Nothing wrong with those values. The problem is not with logging on – I can’t even visit the site.
Here’s the message:

Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

This time learning a bit more about backing up MySQL databases.

Much appreciated syncbox, I’d got as far as exporting the tables, now I’ll try the rest.

I suppose the text of my posts is in the MySQL database, but I don’t have a clue how to find it.

Unfortunately, my backup is the same – I tried that.
I’m sure you’re right, the whole thing is trashed.
One question.
Which php file or files would contain the text from my posts? I’d like to recover that if possible.

Tried replacing the file. Made no difference.

No, not that I’m aware of. I hadn’t accessed it for some weeks. Just decided to get motivated and that was the result.
