The article on shooflydesign.org is certainly still valid. I have written a tutorial on this topic as well. You should be able to easily modify the sample code from Part 1 of my tutorial to do exactly as you need. There is an example of creating a latest posts list with links back into the blog, as well as how to embed the content from your posts or pages.
