Your suggestion was spot on and the solution didn’t require any major work just a couple of plugins:

Visual Term Description Editor(there are other similar plugins as well) to get WYSIWYG editor on custom taxonomy description text areas.

TinyMCE Advanced to prevent <p> tags being stripped out.

For me it seems to be worse for recurring events; with these adding custom attributes or any sort of customisation breaks the links…
