Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Brand new siteCustomizing a theme, using plugins and such could end up costing you more than paying a host so you can do those things for free
– You mean customising themes in WordPress.com or www.remarpro.com?
– Why will it cost me anything?Domain name registration will be required, then I also have a dedicated IP, domain privacy and domain backup for just a few dollars more
– I knew about domain name reg but what is dedicated IP, domain privacy and domain back up?

Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Brand new siteCosts aside, I think you have a good plan. Just be a bit careful, though, since the premium stuff at .com that is free here can add up rather quickly. So, I would suggest you begin there and then seriously consider moving when you begin reaching for your credit card.
Regards your comments leejosepho I am a little confused.
– What do you mean by Premium stuff ?
– You suggest I begin where ?
– What costs are associated with running www.remarpro.com on a BlueHost hosting sever other than the 5 dollars a month or so ?Mike
If you think the above is a good idea to familiarise myself with wordpress first then I guess another question would be if I teach myself WordPress using WordPress.com and maybe even build the structure of the site with it (minus the limitations WordPress.com has compared to www.remarpro.com), then how much of a big deal will it be to move my WordPress.com site to www.remarpro.com on a hosting server later ?
After reading up a bit more, think it makes send for me to install WordPress.com first and stry with that (as I see this is hosted for you free of charge)… The reason being Iban familiarise myself with how to build the site first…. Once O am comfortable, I will take your advice and go straight to www.remarpro.com and pay for hosting.
Hopefully this makes sense to you ?
I am sure I will be back in the forums in due course for other topics.
As I said though your help so far has helped a bit with the learning curve. Thanks.
Well money basically … But that is another story ??
Just thinking I’d rather work locally rather than paying for hosting when the site is bringing no revenue in whilst in development… And I don’t know how long that will be – as I have to teach myself WordPress aswell BTW ! ??
I will need to keep a back up of the site locally though but I guess that is just a bunch of files ?
Great help so far and much appreciated…
I think I am getting there …
But your advice would be leaning towards getting a web host straightaway?… Any particular reason for that?
Ok … My laptop is Win XP
So in a nutshell if my NAS does not have a built in web server then I cannot get it to be one and install and run Apache, MySQL and PHP ?
I can’t see anything else in there about it…
I don’t know what is involved in converting my laptop into a webserver but I am assuming that I can’t do the same thing on my NAS drive ?
I am getting round to your way of thinking of just paying for the hosting now to avoid the headaches as I plan to get a plan with BlueHost eventually anyway and develop it there.

Trying to find out but in the manual it has this functionality…
? Remote Access: GoFlex Home provides access to your digital content from anywhere inside or outside your home, using the Web-based Seagate Share application. You can
even access GoFlex Home from your smartphone, such as an iPhone? or Android device, or from another portable entertainment device, such as an iPad?.So would I be right in thinking it does?
Mike
Thanks esmi,
As a final question, I guess I could install WordPress on my nas drive and run a local webserver on the nas drive aswell instead of running a local web server on my laptop?
Mike
Ok it sounds a little complicated and I am wondering if any extra work is worth it…
I guess here’s the question.. Do you think I am better off doing this or just paying for hosting now while developing the site?
(I guess I will want to back up the site at home anyway but that will be just WordPress files etc that can be stored on my NAS drive?)
What do you think?
Mike
On my laptop or network drive?
My laptop is Win XP but I want to install WordPress on the network drive and I am not sure what that OS is.
Yes not too sure what it is…
The network drive is Seagate 1TB GoFlex Home but I can’t find info on the OS…. Possibly Ubuntu Linux but not too sure.
Mike
Which of those links would I use for install to a home network drive?
Or do you need more info from me?
And what is the difference between those links and the ones here:
