Thaknks for all the help. It turned out that it was indeed another plugin that caused the problem. I disabled all the plugins and I can confirm that the Google Authenticator plugin is working a treat.

Apologies for not using the backtick for my last post.
OK I’ve turned on debugging and I’ve noticed something rather interesting
Fatal error: Call to undefined function update_options() in /var/www/clients/client4/web19/web/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/admin/class-admin.php on line 441
It looks as though my SEO plugin is causing the issue. I assumed it was caused by the Google Authenticator plugin as everything was hunky dory before I installed it.
I tried logging in using my phone and I see the following in my server logs. (IP address changed by my for privacy). I get the same problem on my phone only this time instead of a warning page I get a blank page.
