  • It seems from my troubled experiments or what I’ve read that the App folder serves no purpose and can be eliminated. Is this correct?

I haven’t been able to find documentation on the correct file paths for multiple sites?
    Is this it:

    Dropbox/site1/wp2db

    Dropbox/site2/wp2dp

    or is this it:

    Dropbox/wp2db/site1 and site2

I just got a 2012 Macbook Pro laptop, still in the box, so I’ll bring it into the Apple Store’s “Set Up Desk” or “One on One Table” and work this out.

Thanks I am glad to learn this. My Powermac can’t run Chrome. Another reason I need to buy a new computer. : )

THANKS for setting up that link for me. I see that WPtouch is working. Without your setup I can’t get into Botsvsbrowser.org. I’ll try RWD Bookmarklet too.

    Best!

Thanks for the awesome lessons. I think if you keep making these well organized, wonderfully delivered, lessons that are attached to the well documented WordPress default themes you’ll allow many more visual designers like myself to expand our offerings to small and medium sized businesses. It gives me an entry into web design, development and UX design. And it gives small businesses access and perspective to the best of online technology that I haven’t found anywhere else.

That being said I just ran into another roadblock using my local MAMP. I tried installing Jetpack and it wouldn’t connect with wordpress.com.

“Your website needs to be publicly accessible to use Jetpack: site_inaccessible

Error Details: The Jetpack server was unable to communicate with your site [IXR -32300: transport error: http_request_failed couldn’t connect to host]”

Maybe there’s a way to just ftp the Jetpack files to local? Anyway, to expedite I installed Jetpack on the live site. Now I’m further along on the live site.

So maybe local works for you because you’ve internalized all these processes? I’m guessing you install the basic plugins like the top ten you mention in your “WordPress Essentials” lesson, (another great one) then download this prepped WordPress to your local drives and start building it out.

Anyway I really appreciate the great work you’re doing!

The original question was resolved but the second issue I think deserves a separate thread the more I think about it.

I did a fresh install of wordpress and started the whole development over locally. This resolved conflicting databases from live and local. I also found an old version of Text Wrangler. But is there a better way to work on a child theme locally? Or should I work live? Here’s the issue.

Godaddy or maybe all web hosting has this convoluted process to go live from my MAMP Local Host. If I want to show my client daily updates I have to do this:

    Export localDB.SQL

Edit localDB.SQL Find and replace local url with live urls

Edit Local wp-config file. Keep this for later use.
Replace local wp-config.php file with live wp-config.php file.

Can this be done once and reused each time or does the wp-config.php absorb other changes while I’m working on the child theme? If this is so then I have to go through a similar process with this file as with the database file.

    Convoluted upload process from GoDaddy:
Importing sql files into mysql databases using phpmyadmin

Even when everything is done right not all local changes will transfer:

    – I still have to go into WordPress Dashboard and reset Permalinks
    – I still have to go into WordPress Twenty Eleven Theme Customization Tab as all customizations have to be reset.

So what would be the best practices for developing this child theme? I heard from a GoDaddy supervisor that I could work live and install a password management plug-in to turn access off and on for client reviews while in progress. That way I can show the client the site what I reach milestones and they’re not confused when looking at unfinished phases. So I’m wondering why anyone would want to work locally if all this time is eaten up going live?

I’ve been watching the Lynda.com video
WordPress Essentials which seems to already cover
New To WordPress – Where to Start
    Installing WordPress

None of it had to do with starting from a custom theme. It just seems to be tangent info.

No I do not know. WordPress has this big download button to give me all these php files but there is nothing I can do with them? I still don’t get it.

I’ve written Rafael a week ago but have not received a reply so I have no idea what the usage is. I contacted a name I found in the code and the guy is just a plugin developer and knows nothing about the site. So with all the deadends I’ve gone down recently I would just like to hire a developer (I’ve placed an ad) or know how and where to paste the code to get started changing it.

What keywords do I search to find a tutorial to do this specifically without wasting a lot of time sifting through tangent info. I don’t want to start with a theme that puts me farther away from my end goal. That just doesn’t seem to make sense if I’ve already found something close.

I want to learn how do this. All I can find is info on using existing themes. I’ll change it so that it’s not a copyright infringement. All it is are boxes with rounded corners, san-serif font, gray and a search-able database. It’s just a way to start. Can anyone offer some actionable advice?

Thanks, you cleared that up pretty well. Sorry for one more question. Where’s the button to make this forum notify me by email when there’s been a reply to this thread?

Thanks RVoodo. Do I need to download the WordPress application to do this or can I use the free WordPress sites? I’m not sure the capacity or features of the two routes WordPress offers, but my site will be much like the one mentioned.
