Oh cool! I actually made a work around today probably similar to what you have by using wp_generate_attachment_metadata.

Yeah I fixed it, there was a plugin installed called Post Type Archives (how did I miss that?!?!) that was forcing the archive page.
Sorry for wasting your time, always a challenge when taking over someone else’s site.

Sorry, I just found that the site I was asked to work on had another plugin that was causing the issue (I think, I still need to test/delete etc)

It is an existing CPT registered with CPTUI. Does CPTUI show non CPTUI registered CPTs?
