I now have updated the Link Checker and the new version 1.2.1 is available. Hope it is ready on time ?? May you try the new version?

    Hi Penny,

    Thank you for your feedback.

I had a closer look and the cause for the error you get is a bug in the Link Checker. The Link Checker currently uses the siteurl variable, which I thought refers to the “Site Address URL”, but as it turned out, this variable refers to the “WordPress address URL”. The naming is a bit misleading ??

I will fix this issue in a few hours and upload a new version of the Link Checker in the evening. I would be happy if you try the fixed version later.

    Best regards,
    Marco

    Hi Penny,

I had a quick look and the origin of the issue is that you have set a wrong site URL in your WordPress configuration.

The Sitemap Generator uses the default URL which you have set in the WordPress configuration. For your site this is currently “https://www.shannarawiki.net/wp/”. If I open this URL, I just get an error.

Is is possible that you moved your site from this URL to https://www.shannarawiki.net/ recently?

If so, then you have to adjust the configuration. You find the option in the general WordPress settings. I currently have no English WordPress installation, so I could not tell you how it is named exactly, but it should be something like “Settings” -> “General” -> “Site URL”… Please let me know if you have trouble to find it.

    Best regards,
    Marco

    Hi Penny,

Thank you for trying the Link Checker.

The error message you get means that the backend of the Link Checker could not reach your website.

Is it possible that the website is not online yet? If it is already online, could you send me the link to your website? Then I could have a closer look.

    Best regards,
    Marco

    Hi,

sorry that the Link Checker didn’t work for you.

Maybe you could post the error message in the support forum the next time. The most errors with the plugin are caused by bad hosting configuration and are fixable ??

You could also post the error message here and I may could help you.

    Best regards,
    Marco

    Thank you for your feedback.

If you do the link check just one time, then yes, you are right. I also offer the Link Checker as an online tool on my website if that is less cumbersome for you.

    https://www.marcobeierer.com/tools/link-checker

The idea behind the WordPress plugin is that you could easily access the Link Checker when you are working in the backend anyway. So you don’t have to open an online tool on a website.

And of course there is the scheduler in the paid version, but I can not offer all features for free, because the operation of the servers and the development also costs money and time…

Therefore I try to describe the limitations of the free version as good as possible in the plugin description.

Sorry that the plugin does not match your needs.

Thank you for your feedback, I will highlight the button in one of the next version. I see that it is not ideal ??

In the free version it is necessary to start the check manually. In the professional version of the Link Checker it is possible to use the scheduler, which triggers a check once a day and will send you a summary email each day.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

    Hi colbymc,

Have you seen that you have to start the Link Checker manually? There is a button “Check your website” next to the headline.

    Hi Danny,

    Thank you for your message.

This looks like you are using an outdated PHP version. The Link Checker requires at least PHP 5.3. This error normally happens if you use an older version. Could that be the case?

If so, I would recommend you to upgrade to a newer PHP version. The official support for PHP 5.2 stopped in January 2011. The current versions are PHP 5.6 and 7.0.

Nowadays every hoster should offer at least PHP 5.3, but you have to carefully check your complete site after the switch. Normally the most things should work fine, but if you are using older plugins, they may not work well with newer PHP versions.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

    Best regards,
    Marco

    Hi Jeff

Thank you for your interest in the Link Checker.

Sorry, but it is currently not possible to check pages behind a login. I may add this feature in the future, but it is not a top priority at the moment. I will need at least (!) six to twelve month til I find time to implement it.

If you like to get a reminder when the function is available, you could sign up for my newsletter on my website.

Please let me know if you further questions.

    Hi Buzas,

Thank you for your review. If you would like to post the URL of your website, I could have short look and solve the issue.

The most times if the sitemap is empty, either the the crawler of the Sitemap Generator is blocked in your robots.txt or noindex is set for all pages. I describe both cases more detailed in the FAQ.

    Hi robbieSCS,

    Thank you for your review.

The limitations of the free version of the Sitemap Generator are clearly described in the readme file. There is a section called “Is the service free of charge?” and a section called “Limitations”. In both the limitation of 500 URLs is clearly described…

Where do you like to read about the limitations? May you rethink your rating with this information?

    Best regards,
    Marco

    Hi bvgillis,

I’m glad that you like the plugin.

Currently you have to start the generation process manually. However, I’m planning to implement the scheduled generation of sitemaps, but this feature would likely only be available in the professional version of the Sitemap Generator.

If I would add this feature to the free version, the load on the server would increase dramatically and the operation would be to expensive…

Please let me know if you have further questions.

    Marco

    Hello Treebeard,

Thank you for your bug report. I had a look at the issue and hopefully fixed it in the new version 1.1.2. May you try this version and report back if it works?

I used a URL instead of a path as input for the file_get_contents function in the old version. This accidentally worked in the most hosting environments and so I have not detected the error earlier.

    Best regards,
    Marco
