In reply to: Upgrade goes fine, but my previous posts are goneOkay, I see what you’re saying. I followed the 5 step install instead of the 3 step upgrade instructions.
At any rate – I was able to fix the problem.
Could be me, but there’s gotta be an easier way to upgrade…

In reply to: Upgrade goes fine, but my previous posts are goneThe directions for the 5 minute install say:
3 Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php.
4 Open wp-config.php in your favorite text editor and fill in your database details as explained in Editing wp-config.php to generate and use your secret key password.Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Upgrade goes fine, but my previous posts are goneI looked in the database and I found my previous posts – they all have a wp_ and then some other letters before the next _. So I went into wp-config.php and changed the line: $table_prefix = to include this new prefix. Saved the file and refreshed the site and now the page is blank.
I followed the “5 minute install” directions on the wordpress site and I think a know a little bit about what I’m doing, but still…this is frustrating.
Okay, can either of you answer one or both of the following questions (I really appreciate it – maybe I’ll finally understand something here):
1) What did I do wrong in the upgrade? I put in all the correct information about the database into the wp-config.php – so why does it look like I have a fresh install?
2) Since I can see all my old posts in the database (doesn’t that suggest that this wasn’t a fresh install?) but they have a different prefix, how come when I change the “$table_prefix =” line in wp-config.php and refresh the site I wind up with a blank page?
Thanks,
Michael

In reply to: Upgrade goes fine, but my previous posts are goneThanks for the response. I went into the database to take a look and I can’t find any of my old posts there. I’m using Dreamhost and all my tables for all my other blogs have the wp_ prefix.
Were the previous tables (and therefore my blog entries) somehow erased?

In reply to: problems after fresh install attemptI need help with this same message. I’ve had my wordpress blog going for a year and a half now and I just tried to upgrade to 2.6.1. I thought I did everything right, so I changed the config-sample.php as directed, then saved it as config.php. Then I tried to run wp-admin/install.php and I got the “Already Installed” message.
I can’t drop any database tables (I don’t understand why I would have to) – I’ve got a year and a half of post entries in that database. What’s going on and what can I do about it?
Help please!
Michael

In reply to: Test a theme by having two sites use the same databaseI decided to go with using MAMP. I followed the directions on how to install it on my Mac and I got MAMP to recognize a brand new wordpress blog. I have a backup of my main site blog that I downloaded a couple days ago, so I created a new database and imported the backup. That all went fine, but what I can’t figure out is how to get MAMP to use this new database. I changed the config file to what I thought was correct, but all I get when I try to connect (locally) is a blank screen. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

In reply to: Test a theme by having two sites use the same databaseI tried creating a new database and importing the backed up database from my main site, but when I go to the new site it re-directs to the main site. Why would that happen?
I may try the idea of running it on a local server. That make sense. But if anyone knows the answer to the above question that would be great. And thanks for the info about blocking this from Google – I’d want to do that for sure.

In reply to: Test a theme by having two sites use the same databaseFollow-up:
Or how about this: what if I backup the database from my main site, then create a new database in myphpAdmin and then import the backup into this new database. Then I point the other site to use this new database and then I can tweak as much as I want without touching my main site.
Sounds like it’ll work. Is this the best way to go about this?
Thanks.
