The variation button link will bring you to the product details page( https://prnt.sc/FMgZ8JspDcDb ) and you have to select the option from this page like – https://prnt.sc/EG7QbuVh6P8V. And this page design depends on the template either from the plugin or theme.

Other tricks – please check your variation product details page.

It is not possible to show the image using a custom post-type taxonomy. Because we know only the WordPress core category filter.
