False alarm on the blank home page — it seems to be working now. I can’t imagine what happened — I’ve been checking my browser caches, etc.

As far as the rest of it goes — everything seems fine now after reinstalling from scratch and importing the data from a backup made after the break-in. After spending several hours researching exploits, I couldn’t find any anomalies in my database. I can only hope all is well!

    Clayton,

Indeed it seems to be working now! I can’t imagine what happened — I checked my browser caches, etc. So false alarm, and thanks for your attention anyway.

Thnnks for the links! I had found that stuff already but it took time to go through it all. I couldn’t find any anomalies in the database so I wiped and reloaded everything w/ the latest database version (fingers crossed).

But now my home page won’t load. Everything else looks fine — all the other pages, my admin pages, etc.

KirkM — I’m using 2.5 now and while the new editor is slicker, I can’t say it’s much easier, just different.

The easiest way to put photos into your site is with flickr/Picasa plugins. You may be limited in your display and styling options, but if you accept how they do it you won’t have to worry about how everything looks if you change templates.

I just wish template makers would document their templates, and let us know how many pixels wide their columns are.

The problem most people have is not uploading the photos, but sizing and formatting them properly for the template they’re using. Having to figure out the proper size for their template’s main content column, then resizing each photo manually before uploading, is a time consuming pain. Then you have to enter the right style calls into your <img> tag, so the photo will be positioned and styled properly.

I haven’t decided myself what the best way to handle all of this is. Flickr and a companion plugin? Some other plugin, or combination of plugin and photo service?

I can figure something out, but I’m not sure about non-technical users.

AN/MidPhase (same company) are reliable, cheap, and give you a bunch of free ad credit when you sign up. Whether or not you plan to advertise over the long term, the initial ad credit can be helpful in promoting a new site.

Avoid Bluedomino. They have an old, broken version of WordPress, and installing/upgrading on your own won’t work. Their support is useless, and takes 23 hours and 59 minutes to respond to email.

Thanks for your reply. I had done this, but apparently it takes awhile for the other changes to go through on my server. It’s all working now.

I think I fixed the problem, by turning off Javascript in Firefox. Others have fixed similar problems the same way. I don’t know what’s causing this though.
