I removed them and it does get rid of the box visually but does not free up the space. Any ideas how i would take it that one step further?

Just got another email from prettylinks…………

I contacted prettylinks through their site and reported the problem shortly after posting here. I have a reply already which impresses me a bit as most are pretty unresponsive.

“The error has been reported and will be fixed asap”

Doesn’t really give us much but at least we know they are on it
