  • Thank you for this very important information! I have been preparing to rebuild a site that may include Woocommerce and also a bbPress forum. Knowing this is a huge help and time saver!

WOW! Thank you for this thread! I have been using NexGEN Public Uploader for years for my bbPress forum page. I allow anonymous forum use and needed a way to allow dog owners to upload their photos of ill dogs safely into a NexGEN gallery that is set to run a slideshow in the sidebar. Unfortunately the NexGEN Public Uploader had to be removed, the plugin was causing errors on the site.

I searched for new file uploader and finally settled on WordPress File Uploader. So I also would love to have it hook into my NexGEN gallery.

Thank you so much for the wonderful plugin! It is so important for our dog owners to share their dog pictures, we run 300-400 photos through a slide show, those that survived and those who didn’t.

My solution before I read this thread was that the admins would go into the Media gallery and download the photos to their computer and then move them back up to the NexGEN gallery. Right now I am having a problem that the SELECT FILE and UPLOAD buttons only display when someone is logged in, but not for our anonymous forum users. I believe that there must be some way to allow this and that is my next step to research.

So, @nickboss, if I copy the second page of code and drop it into my functions.php file (where should I put this exactly?), (making sure to note the correct gallery ID) this should work? I don’t often mess with the php files like this. Unfortunately I never made a child theme since this site was built 11 years ago, but I do keep track of my changes so I can go in and remove that code if there is a problem.
Thank you for your help, Matoca

Thank you for getting this topic started. I recently got the same email and panicked when I read this topic, I had already clicked the email. Luckily Bluehost tech support chat helped me within a few minutes to recognize it was phishing and worked with me to get me to the correct web address so I could change my password. Please keep this topic open for a bit, it looks like the same email keeps going out.

This is not resolved! I get an email everyday that says the backup was made but: Failed to upload to Google Drive: failed to access parent folder (Error calling GET https://www.googleapis.com/drive/v2/about: (401) Invalid Credentials)

This plugin has consumed hours of my time and the instructions are extremely variable depending on which ones you follow. The “New” instructions to connect with Google Drive still don’t work and there is no response.

Sorry for the delay in attempting this again.
I followed these instructions exactly and it appeared to go well. I could see that it immediately attempted to do a backup but there were errors and it failed again. There is a error calling GET and the reason seems to be (401) Invalid Credentials. The were errors so the “resume” event is rescheduled.

When I first attempted this I went so deep into the google api setup that I am not sure exactly where the problems are.

Could I uninstall, delete and reinstall the app to make this work properly?
    Thank you, Matoca

Sorry, I missed that information, my fault. It’s bbPress Notify (No-Spam) Digests. You know that thing were you have 34 tabs open in your browser and you can’t figure out where the music is coming from?

Has there been any attempt to fix this problem? It’s been a long time and it is still not working at all. I follow your documentation instructions but I only get a “can’t do this” symbol when I hover over and click on top of the thumbnail.
    “CUSTOMIZE THUMBNAIL PREVIEW CROP
Go to Manage Gallery > select your gallery you wish to customize the thumbnail preview for an image. Hover over the thumbnail and a list of links should appear, click ‘Edit Thumb’:”

    Milan,
Thank you for the quick response.

I understand the problem with WP roles and anonymous users. I know this is really of function of bbPress and those developers make it work really well. It certainly has limited privileges but it has been ideal for our purposes, which is to maintain their privacy on line. Akismet is amazing at catching the junk. Clearly though, users like a “facebook” like experience and get confused by not registering or being able to upload photos of their dogs. The NEXTGen uploader helps protect the site by uploading to a gallery that saves them for approval.

Your plugin has made it much easier for the admins and keymasters to put images directly into the replies in the forum.

Currently the first step to get photos into anonymous topics or replies is that an anonymous user uploads a photo via a NEXTGen plugin into a NEXTGen gallery for approval. That NEXTGen gallery is set to run these images as a slideshow on the forum sidebar. The admins have to go into the gallery and uncheck the image for approval first. Then to insert photos into anonymous topics or posts we have to open the topic or reply in the dashboard and insert the photo directly into the reply using that NEXTGen gallery. It is time consuming.

So your plugin has helped us shorten this process, we can now avoid having to insert the photos into the topics or replies in the dashboard. When the anonymous user uploads an image and we go into the gallery to approve it we can also download the image locally at the same time and then use your plugin to put it directly into the forum. That really saves us time, thank you, this is a really big deal to us!

    Hifunda,
Thank you very much for the excellent details! As I read through this, prepared to do all these steps, I saw that you mentioned I needed to get my Bluehost server and port details from them. Tech support gave me the (somewhat incorrect) information.

So when I went back to the Wizard, I realized that I was able input the Bluehost mail server name. The next step was entering the port number. I entered the port Bluehost gave me but it was different than the Postman suggested port. That was problem number one.

The next problem was that Bluehost told me my user was my email address and the Wizard enforces that by mentioning that some hosts will only recognize the account email address.

So this combination did not work. I then decided to not only let Postman pick the port it suggested, but I also changed the user name to the one that I use to log into my Bluehost account and not use the email address. Bingo! It worked!

So I didn’t have to use the Google API after all. The Bluehost information that Postman uses was accepted by the server.

Unfortunately, while some of the email notifications are now coming to me, some are still being lost somewhere. I have some more troubleshooting to do before it all works.

    Michael,
I spent way too much time on a Bluehost chat with no resolution for why I am not receiving notification emails. So I decided that rather than fighting Bluehost on this I would find a some other way to get my notifications.

I found a WP plugin, Postman SMTP, that authenticates to Bluehost as “me” and sends my notifications to me. Postman notes that Bluehost and a few other hosts like Godaddy are problematic when it comes to SMTP mail. Other users can set up a Google API that allows them to use their favorite email host like Google.

However, after getting the correct mail host information from Bluehost I was able to setup Postman properly. I uploaded an image and promptly received my notification email, sent by “me” to me, via user agent Postman SMTP.

Problem solved. Thank you for all your help!

    Michael,
I decided I had better do some complete research before answering you back. I had a long chat with Bluehost support to find out if a number of my notification emails were being held back as spam. From what the tech said, no, things are not being blocked. But yet, it appears that many of my notifications, generated by various plugins, are not getting to me. For instance I have Wordfence and it is supposed to notify me of every login attempt. I have not been receiving them.

So the answer is no, it’s not just the Uploader notifications that are being blocked. Now Bluehost suggested to me that I uninstall and reinstall all the plugins with notifications. I think that is a overkill. I suppose I could re-save each plugin’s settings with the email addresses listed, but I doubt that really would make a difference.

This appears to be a bigger problem that started with the most recent WP update. I’ve carefully enabled one or two plugins at a time trying to figure out the guilty parties. But everything improved site-wide today when I did the 18 Photocrati updates. The site started loading really fast and that is the first time there has been any improvement since the WP update. One moderator has been trying to put a single NextGEN image in a topic and save it for 3 days but she couldn’t get the topic to update, the button was greyed out.

Photocrati was clearly the main issue with at least some of the problems and I am grateful they issued a fix. I’ll do more research when I have a few hours and see if I can resolve the notification problem. I’ll let you know what I come up with.

    Michael,
I installed the 18 Photocrati updates and just uploaded an image from the Uploader on the forum page. It loaded quickly into the gallery, to the last gallery page, just as it is supposed to do. Success!

It appears that the slideshow is also loading quickly on my work computer and my phone. I’ll need to try it on a fresh computer later to make sure this isn’t caching helping, but it seems like this is also resolved.

The only problem I need to resolve is why I am not getting any notification emails for successful image uploads. I have had notifications emails set properly in Uploader Settings for a long time and it has always worked. Since this whole Photocrati problem started, we have not been receiving email notifications that a new image has been uploaded, thus us missing the new images that went into the gallery directly.

Looks like Photocrati had some major issues to address with the latest WP update. I downloaded the update log to see what was impacted and the updates are global.

    Michael,
    Just logged into the dashboard and there are 18 Photocrati updates that weren’t there last night! ;-}

We’ll see what impact this has on my specific issues.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Of interest: Last night I discovered that the new images that we have been trying to upload are actually going into the gallery, but somewhere in the middle of the gallery, out of “date uploaded” order. That’s why we weren’t seeing them! Of course that is not a Uploader error at all but something wrong with NextGEN.

I have continued to have problems with NextGEN not presenting the gallery images to me in “date uploaded” order when I am accessing the gallery, for instance to place an image in a reply or post. In other words, new images uploaded would go into the gallery properly, last page with the newest image. But when trying to access them to place in a reply/post, they are presented as “somewhere” randomly in the gallery, no sorted order, but generally about in the middle of the gallery. I had asked NextGEN to please add a feature that would allow sorting for this purpose but they said it wasn’t a highly requested item. Trying to work with the gallery like this is painfully slow and it can take up to 15 min to find an image by having to search all pages of the gallery and actually insert it into a reply.

Now it appears that this failure to put new images in “date uploaded” order into the gallery from NextGEN Uploader is also happening. This would be the first time this has ever happened.

By “geek” I mean the html is scrambling the page display, losing some of the CSS instructions.

I’m not sure how I would check the “backend” of displaying of the page. I do have multiple computers and a phone to check the page display. They all show the same behavior, a failure of the js to load the slideshow as soon as the page is requested. I understand enough about js to know that the js could be moved up into the page higher to improve that, but why all of a sudden after working for years ok, is this a problem? Yes it is true, all images are being loaded quickly onto the page but without the js to organize them they just spill down the page.

None of this is an Uploader problem, I can see that. Thank you for your time answering my questions and helping me figure this out!

I put the widget back up after a day and it did the same thing. But then I noticed after a few minutes the slide show started working ok. What would cause the page load to delay loading the js? Is this some problem with caching?

I understand a little about js, enough to understand that it helps html display behaviors such as do something onclick, or in this case display a single image, wait 5 sec and then change to the next image. Since all images are displaying at the same time in the beginning then it would seem this isn’t a caching problem. But it appears the js is not serving the instructions.

I use NextGEN image compression on my site and further I optimize all images in that gallery for web at 500px before uploading. So unless it is the cumulative file size of the gallery causing a loading problem I would need to know more to troubleshoot this.
    Thank you, Matoca
