I discovered that our ISP had provided a wp-config.php that contained a define for WP_SITEURL setting it to https://<name>.com. Not only does defining WP_SITEURL in wp-config.php cause the field within wp-admin General Settings for “WordPress Address (URL)” to be greyed out it was also in conflict with the setting for “Site Address (URL)” which is set to https://www.<name>.com. This conflict in values is what was causing the Preview of page drafts to display “Oops! That page can’t be found.” No idea why our ISP thinks setting WP_SITEURL in wp-config.php is a good idea nor why they omitted the “www” from the URL.

We deactivated plugins via wp-admin. Still get the Preview error.

We renamed the wp-content/plugins/ directory to wp-content/plugins.HOLD/.
Still get the Preview error.

Did not have time to try the Theme change test.

Thanks for the suggestions Tara. I’ll try them and report results.

I’m new to WordPress in terms of creating/managing content. Most of my wordpress related time has been spent installing the wordpress database and filesystem to our ISP web hosting server and fixing various portability and compatibility issues.

Thanks for the info regarding differentiating Pages and Posts. We have both on our site. The reason I mentioned the Settings/Permalinks config is that when we change the config between “Plain” and “Post name” all URLs are altered when viewing our website including those URLs that display Pages. Clearly this config settings affects Pages. I thought perhaps this config setting might be involved in our issue since the Page Preview that fails uses a “Plain” style URL while we have Settings/Permalinks set to “Post name”. And, when we promote the Page from being a draft to being published it displays correctly.

There is also the possibility that the content of .htaccess is involved in this issue so I’ll be investigating that as well.

Question: when a Preview of a Page is being viewed are files created in the wordpress installation directory structure? If so, where do they live in the filesystem?
