In reply to: Lost access to dashboard & edit / new functionalityHi
Thanks for that. In the interim I managed to suss what had happened.
While doing my FTP back up I had somehow (fat finger syndrome?) managed to delete the wp-admin folder from my public_html drive.
Luckily I have other WordPress based sites so with fat fingers firmly crossed I simply uploaded a copy of their wp-admin folders to replace the missing one and now everything works fine.

Thanks, – I’ve had a read through but not being particularly technical I’m not sure I’m any the wiser about which bits of these apply to correcting the specific problem I have – can you point me at the bit I need?
Failing that, I think I will ask my host whether they can rest my site by uninstalling and reinstalling WordPress so I can start from scratch.
Given that many people must want to have their WordPress site based at their root directory I have to say I’m surprised at how much of a problem this seems to be being.
Rgds

Thanks – have gone back and checked settings / general and removed /wordpress from the site address url (which I thought I had already done earlier on in the set up but hey ho).
Now the permalink looks fine eg:
https://knitwitshop.co.uk/wool_and_yarn/
But when I try and open it I get a 404 error message.

In reply to: Root install only work for homepage – other permalinks inc /worAh – right I have gone to the general settings and removed /wordpress from the site address url (I have to say I was sure I’d already done this earlier in the set up but never mind!)
Now the /wordpress/ element does not come up in the page address when I create it:
https://knitwitshop.co.uk/wool_and_yarn/
which is what I want.
But – when I try to open the page I get a 404 message taht it can’t be found.
