I have freshly installed WordPress 4.4.2 on a server running PHP 5.6.13 and OpenSSL/0.9.8e, and I encountered the SSL certificate problem.
Replacing the default ca-bundle.crt (temporarily) fixed the issue for me. This works with both https://curl.haxx.se/ca/cacert.pem and https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bagder/ca-bundle/e9175fec5d0c4d42de24ed6d84a06d504d5e5a09/ca-bundle.crt.

UPDATE As I see it the plugin fails to force https for the first page to be displayed. I have fallen back on mod_rewrite in htaccess to redirect all queries.
Installed WordPress HTTPS (SSL) 3.3.6 on a WordPress 4.0.1 and it works fine for me.
@jberg1 Thanks for the fix!

I miss reCaptcha, especially the MailHide function. I don’t know when it actually stopped working. Was it an plugin update or a WordPress update?
Has Google changed the reCAPTCHA Mailhide API? (“… new reCAPTCHA launches soon…”)
I miss the reCaptcha MailHide function as well. I don’t know when it actually stopped working. Was it an plugin update or a WordPress update?

I agree with vcherep: no disappointment here. But thankfulness the plugin is there at all and working — for the time being.
