It was because i wasn’t using the featured image functionality within the post, i was just inserting the image. Oh well, it`s all a learning curve..

What i would like to be able to achieve though now is the same styling for the posts on the front-page as the ones on the blog page, that just means a simple underline under each post, any way to pull this from the blog posts? Or does this need to be done within a post??

Also i`d like the read more to be right at the end of the text, as opposed to being underneath the paragraph where it is now.

    Any guidance warmly received.

Thanks deepbevel, that led me through to find some code that displays the title permalink, excerpt and read more. That all displays fine now, the only thing i cant get to display is the thumbnail. Here is my updated code: https://pastebin.com/9qCfc61Q

I have the thumbnail in the post, i just cant get it to display.

Also as i`m new to this, would someone please explain to me how the code shown in the previous posters post is a muliple loop, i cant seem to work out where one starts and the othwr ends.

    Thanks all

OK, i have renamed the custom template as you described.
And have deleted the code taken from the article from the top of the page, but left the part that referenced the loop within the container i wanted to display the latest posts in.

That now shows a h2 and a link which just loops back to the homepage.

I would now just like to display two posts from my blog in that left hand container, preferably with the post thumbnail, is there a more specific way of doing this, or part of the codex that would simplify this for me, being a novice and all as i am ??

    Thanks for the help

    Thanks for the reply blogjunkie.

I have now done it the way you suggested. And it`s still working.

But previous to that i had already created then added a front-page.php file and just dropped it in the child theme folder via ftp, and it automatically used this instead of the page.php.

I used the code inside the page.php file minus any reference to the loop to do this, so in the case of the twentyeleven child theme i kept the header and footer, and the <div id=”primary”> & the <div id=”content” role=”main”> containers that are coded into that theme to hold the homepage content,is this the best way to go about this?
This is also how i have done it the new way you suggested.

I guess i`m just asking if i should keep the original theme page layout structure as intact as possible, with regards to the main content containers.

Also each time i want to create any custom page do i need to do this again and select it this way, for example if i wanted to write my own theme template for the portfolio page i`d hard-code all the html and other code in a file named template-portfolio.php or some other name, and reference it from the dropdown menu again, in the Portfolio page i created in add pages?

Thanks again for the quick and succinct reply

Or maybe i just keep the homepage i set up in the reading settings when i swapped the front page for homepage round and enter the html structure here? Because when i entered the html into the frontpage.php file and loaded it, it seemed to lose a lot of the styling and the html elements seemed to go skewed.

    Thanks

I have added a file front-page.php, and put all my hard coding for the homepage in here and this appears to have cleared up the issue of the content appearing on all internal pages.

Still would like to know if this is good/common working practice?

    Thanks

So there is no way to present your post in the home page, whe you make a static home page?

Yes, the validator. Haven`t been there for a while.

I did, and it worked. Thanks.

I promise to visit more often..

    This has worked.

But….I just looked at the site in IE8 and it has one of the rollover images for the top navigation hovering over the machines link on every page, apart from of course home, i reall don`t see why it should do this, it shows the image for the hover state of the link.

    Any suggestions?

Sorry is the creating a page with css/html bit wrong or just the bit where i linked to them through the page attributes section. Some clarification would be immensely helpful at this stage, thank you.

    OK Thankyou.

Should i just restart from the beginning then? Using one page i created as a blueprint for all pages? Or should i scrap the design (don’t really want to do that) and do a new one and maybe reinstall wordpress?

The method i have used is purely to create each page in HTML/CSS. Then chop it up, and take out the header, footer content etc and turned them into individual php files along with a stylesheet and a resources folder. And that is basically my theme.

I then created a page for each within WordPress and used the attributes section on each page to link up my navigation?

    This is totally wrong then?

    Regards
