Well, it turns out the images weren’t optimized for the web. In Photoshop, I changed all resolutions to 72 dpi (they were 100), then “Save for Web…” preset JPEG MEDIUM or thereabouts and the problem was fixed.

It seems if images are optimized, they’re read in too large when you upload.

Very tech-retro, a little too much 90’s styling. Maybe a little more web 2.0. Though that’s just my taste.
