I had the same problems.

I’ve been hosting ALL of my WordPress clients with Liquid Web. These guys are fantastic!

Had a new account yesterday, set him up and tried the upgrade to 3.0.1. The upgrade failed. Then I had them install suphp and recompile. I retried the upgrade, and it succeeded.

Only format the cells you want to use. This will force Excel to ignore all of the other cells in the sheet when you save it in .html mode.
