Thanks, that’s interesting. But no, I don’t need multiple sites sharing the same wordpress installation. I have separate wordpress installations for each. The problem is that each one has its own url and i want the proper URL to show up on each site, including the permalinks for each post. I assume that’s why there’s a place to put the site address in addition to the WordPress address: so you can do just that. But whenever I try it never works. If I put a different URL (other than the quintessentialpublications.com directory in which it was originally installed) as the site address, it just screws the site up.

For this one, I’ve installed it to quintessentialpublications.com/drstranger. I’ve also bought the URL drstranger.com and want to forward that to this site, so when you go to drstranger.com it takes you to the front page of my drstranger wordpress site. Instead of masking the URL from godaddy, which makes the entire site just show up as drstranger.com, including the permalinks for the individual posts (and also, apparently, prevents the links from working properly), I want the masking to basically be done by the wordpress. So you go to the front page, and it shows up as drstranger.com. When you click on a post, you get something like “drstranger.com/?p=1” Yet the site is still installed on quintessentialpublications.com/drstranger, but you just can’t see it. Shouldn’t it be able to do this? Am I wrong?

OK, I will use that method to get back in. But here’s what I really need to know. This is something that I have struggled with for years, with every wordpress site I’ve ever made.

I have one big website, quintessentialpublications.com, through hostgator, where I can install limitless versions of wordpress to an infinite number of directories.

What I want to do, since I am paying monthly for this site each month, is to install all my other smaller websites on it as well. Most of them are wordpress sites. And what I want to do is have the URLs of the other sites visible, but the content is parked on quintessentialpublications.com.

So like with Dr Stranger, what I initially wanted was to install a wordpress for it on quintessentialpublications.com, but I want it to show up as drstranger.com. Ideally, without masking, because then I can’t have permalinks show up as drstranger.com/whatever.

Assuming I am starting from scratch with this website again, how can I set it up so that it works this way? I assume it is possible but I have never been able to figure it out and have always had to settle on some unideal compromise solution.

PS: I was just now able to use the back button to get back to the “General Settings” page. So I might be able to change something in there now if I knew what I needed to change. But then again maybe not, as I may no longer be logged in as the administrator. I’m not going to do anything yet, just wait for your reply. Thanks.

Timothy: Thanks, that worked. Sort of. But now I have a new problem.

I had it installed to quintessentialpublications.com/drstranger, on a site I host with hostgator. But I had the URL drstranger.com forwarding with masking via godaddy. In the wordpress “General Settings” I had the “WordPress Address” set to quintessentialpublications.com/drstranger” and the “Site “Address” set to drstranger.com.

After getting your advice, I tried several different things, including setting them both to “quintessentialpublications.com/drstranger,” then setting them both to “drstranger.com.” Both of those things led to the problem persisting, and even worse, the theme disappearing, so that all of the design elements were gone and I was left with just text.

So then I removed the “Site Address” listing altogether and took the drstranger url masking off at godaddy.

That worked. The theme is back, drstranger.com now forwards to quintessentialpublications.com/drstranger, and the links work fine. Only problem: None of the users can log in now, including me, the administrator, because the accounts were set up for drstranger.com.

Any ideas about how to get back in?
