I’m confused. (Sorry Andrew, you’re dealing with a non-techie guy).
When I looked at the last modified date of the classic theme’s single.php, it was from 2010 (this is before I edited and saved the file), so that means it’s been a long time since it was overwritten, but I’ve been keeping up with the WordPress updates, and I’m always running the latest version (I use the automatic update option).
If updating WordPress to the latest version will overwrite the single.php file, wouldn’t the time-stamp on it be a lot newer than 2010?
Maybe because I have purposely avoided updating the classic theme, due to having customized it and not wanting to lose my customization, that I don’t have to worry about erasing any changes I made? So as long as I don’t update the classic theme, I should be okay?
Sorry, Andrew–that went over my head a bit. I’m not really a techie guy (mainly an artist/writer/composer), so I really struggle with any kind of coding-related stuff. I put together my site with Dreamweaver and a lot of google searches for helpful tips, but I’m mainly a WYSIWYG person.
So you’re saying I shouldn’t change the original theme file?
This is what I did: I went to this local directory:
blah blah blah….wordpress\wp-content\themes\classicAnd I edited the single.php file by deleting this:
<div id=”content” class=”widecolumn”>I then saved this edited version over the remote version on the FTP server.
Was that a bad way to do it? But it worked, since the individual entries on their own page no longer have that spacing.
If that was the wrong way to do it, can you explain how using a Child Theme or Custom CSS plugin is better? Thanks.
Thank you so much! It worked!
Thank you, Pankaj. Can you tell me the name of the file I’m supposed to edit, and which folder it’s in?

In reply to: Missing page for commenting and individual entries? No, I just followed the detailed step in updating to the latest version of WordPress.
I just realized that all the links to the various categories, months, comments…etc don’t work. You can see the latest page, and that’s it.

In reply to: After upgrading to latest version my blog died….I managed to get my WordPress up and running again, but the commenting still leads to a missing page, and the individual entry’s title link also leads to a missing page. Can someone please tell me how I could fix them? Thanks.
Here’s my WordPress page:

In reply to: After upgrading to latest version my blog died….I just got the link to the control panel, and I think I see my database, but what do I do now? My tech knowledge in this area is next to none–I only know how to upload/download from FTP and that’s the extent of my knowledge when it comes to this stuff.
Here’s a screen capture of what I see when I click into the database:

In reply to: After upgrading to latest version my blog died….OK, I’ve tried and tried, and I cannot get anyone from my webhost to reply to me.
See, my site is hosted for free by cgsociety.org because I’m one of the moderators there, and they told me in the past that they are not responsible for any 3rd party software. When I initially got WordPress installed, there was a guy there who was really nice and helpful and he helped me put the database files in place to get WordPress to work. He’s no longer working there and no one there now seems willing to help me. I have no access to anything except the files for my own website, so I have no idea what to do at this point.

In reply to: After upgrading to latest version my blog died….I tried to contact the system admin of the server that’s hosting my website, and he’s not responding. Technically 3rd party software is not their responsiblity anyway. But I don’t have access to the database, so even if I knew how to troubleshoot the database (which I don’t), I wouldn’t be able to. Am I out of options at this point? Have have just cost the past 3 years worth of blog?

In reply to: After upgrading to latest version my blog died….If you did not change anything or alter wp-config.php, then you have another problem with the connection.
Actually, I did try to add those recommended security keys into the config file, and it caused problems, so I re-uploaded the old config file, and to think of it, maybe that’s how I broke WordPress? But shouldn’t re-uploading the config file fix everything if that was indeed the problem?

In reply to: Adding an image link popup window resized to fit image?I really do need the images in their proper directories though, as I have thousands of pictures all sorted in different directories, and they need to remain organized.
Currently, I’m just generating java scripts from Dreamweaver, then cut & paste them into WordPress. Seems to work–although it’s a bit tedius.

In reply to: Adding an image link popup window resized to fit image?I tried it but it didn’t work–but I was probably trying to use it for something else than what it was intended for. I basically have my own websie structure with different image folders for different categories–all already have thumbnails available. I simply want to insert a thumbnail into a blog entry, link that to a popup window that resizes to the size of the larger image.
I have another problem right now–images and text cling to each other and I can’t get them to space apart or form new lines. I tied to do the “Wrapping Text around Images” tutorial, and it’s not surprising that I failed to get it to work as I know nothing about coding and is guessing my way through it all.

In reply to: WYSIWYG template editing tool? Thanks so much for that! I’ve been trying a bunch of stuff like Topstyle, Amaya, TSW WebCoder, EngInSite CSS Editor, Style Studio…etc, but none so far are live WYSIWYG. This CSSVista might just be the one I’m looking for!
