It breaks nonces in a way that stops you from updating, deactivating plugins and also will break your ability to login once you have logged out. Restoring the previous versions’ plugin files fixes the issue immediately.

I suggest users probably shouldn’t upgrade to this new version. Trying to configure other plugins gave the “Are you sure you want to do this? Please try again” error.

It was indeed several occurrences of two different non-printing control characters which snuck into the data. Once I removed them, the feed validated correctly.
