Saveongolf: It sounds like you’re a bit of a newbie, like I am. My understanding is that when you do ANY customizations to a theme (such as changing colors, layouts, fonts, or even adding a plugin), then when WordPress updates, you could lose your changes (and any info that went along with them.)

Instead, you’re supposed to create a “child theme” and make the changes to that, so when WordPress updates you don’t lose your customizations.

I can’t seem to log in to Elegant Themes without creating a new account for money. I’m doing this work for a client who purchased the theme through a different designer years ago and is now defunct.

Thanks for the reply John. Turns out, my theme, “Delicacy” has something wrong with the header code that prevents it from making a child theme at all. (UGH!)

As for your plugin not automatically changing it, that was a good idea because I did find another plugin that “made a child theme” and changed it automatically, however, because of the problem with the Delicacy theme, my whole site was gone and I had to restore it from backup via my host server.

If you ever post anything about how to fix a theme that doesn’t allow for a child theme, I’d love to know about it.

There is no child theme… that’s what I was trying to create.

When I started my site, I used the Delicacy theme. Over time, I’ve gone directly into the Stylesheet (style.css) and made changes to layout, colors, etc, etc.

I recently found out that you’re not supposed to do that… you’re supposed to have a Child Theme so that if there were an update you wouldn’t lose all your customizations. So, I read a zillion blogs, wasted hundreds of hours trying to figure out how to do it, and ended up trying the One Click Child Theme Plugin. Ended up with the error above, etc.

So, that’s the story. Just trying to figure out what would be best to do now. I love my site and have put a lot of work into it! Thanks so much for your time… it is genuinely appreciated!!

Thank you so much, Tech4Eleven! I just restored my site via my host, so I’m okay. But what would you suggest? Should I just always keep a copy of my .css stylesheet whenever I make customizations? Or what? I feel like it’s too late to switch to an entirely different theme and I do have a lot of customizations. Thanks.

I just used the One Click Child Theme (unfortunately before reading this thread!) and am getting the following error: (ACK!!!!)…
