Thanks Ipstenu. I’m surprised that it doesn’t just go ahead. Why wouldn’t you want to update the tables after updating the files?

I can’t believe that I missed the obvious — my browser must have had a cached version of the main site that was there before I installed WP. I guess the redirect must have triggered the cached version somehow (although why it didn’t for the main site is still a mystery).

Anyway, hitting refresh in the browser brought up the site page as it should.
